Superbot: The Real Transformer

NASA’s ambitious plan to create transforming self-configuring robots is very sci-fi, but judging by these pictures they seem to be well on there way:

Two Legs

Superbot’s modular design shows the ability to create a two-legged robot.

Cool huh, but I’m pretty sure this is just NASA’s entry for RobotWars. They just haven’t attached the flamethrower yet.

NASA wanted a robot that could start as 100 blocky modules dropped from an airplane to a desert, reconfigure into a rover that could drive to a sand dune, and then change again to “grow” legs and climb up it. Once the blocky robot reached the top, it would transform into a greenhouse that could protect a group of seeds for two weeks.

Four Legs

Superbot’s modular design allows it to reconfigure and have any number of legs.

No Legs (snake mode)

Superbot’s flexible design allows it to travel using a variety of sizes and shapes.
