“Defined Lines,” I Know You Want It – Auckland Uni Law Students Parody Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”

I thought the video was good but I didn’t realize how good until Aljazeera’s The Stream covered a story on Grace Brown’s Project Unbreakable, an online photo essay exhibit that features images of women and men holding signs with sentences that their rapist said before, during, or after their assault. Word for word, some things quoted are lyrics in “Blurred Lines.”

This tongue-in-cheek parody was part of Auckland University’s law revue, a show of 40 skits performed at SkyCity Theatre last month. Video contains coarse language, and a purple vibrator:

Adelaide Dunn, Olivia Lubbock and Zoe Ellwood are a group of law students who call themselves the “Law Revue girls” and hail from right here in Auckland, New Zealand. They took on Thicke’s number one hit following criticism which described the original song as advocating sexual abuse and “blurring the lines” between consensual and non-consensual sex.

Chlöe from 95bFM’s The Wire spoke with Adelaide Dunn, regarding the video, misogyny, and the state of modern feminism. Quite insightful. You can listen to the full recording here: 95bfm/chloe-adelaide.mp3 (10m44s, 9.8MB, broadcast 3 September 2013)

Unbelievable. I can’t believe this rubbish passes as popular music nowadays — cowbell, snare, hihat, chauvinistic lyrics, Pharrell…
