SHAMELESS: Season 4
It is a good morning when you wake up to learn one of your favourite shows is returning with a brand new season (Premieres Sun, Jan 12 at 9 PM ET/PT). I could write an essay on how great a show SHAMELESS is, and the majority of it would be about the cast who somehow manage to convince me that their absurd and desperate situations are grounded in today’s world. Every character is fleshed out with their own personal dilemmas and ways of overcoming strife, ways that every-other show would be too politically correct to endorse.
At face value one could label this show as crude, but peppered between these rude and sometimes unnerving story arcs are some of the most well written and loving scenes between characters I’ve ever seen in a TV drama. The cast and crew of the US version of SHAMELESS have struck a certain balance of entertainment for me, I just don’t get from any other forms of show.
If I had to single out a favourite character, it would be between the hilariously unpredictable Sheila (Joan Cusack), the resourceful Lip (Jeremy Allen White), the elder sister Fiona (Emmy Rossum) when she’s taking care of business, and of course William H. Macy as Frank, doing what he does best. Child actors are spot on too.
Having said, all the dramatic irony, absurdity and rudeness is a major part of why I love this show too. Despite their low socioeconomic living conditions, The Gallaghers sure know how to party and kick ass. Yeah. …I should get paid for this shit.
