Holy Act of God – I finally get Southland Tales!

•August 15, 2010 • Leave a Comment

I wouldn’t mind discussing this movie with someone. Richard Kelly himself even. I saw Southland Tales as Richard Kelly’s take on what the second coming of Jesus would be like, set in a tangent universe of course.

“This is the way the World ends; not with a whimper, but with a bang”

The world has changed and reverted back to a time of totalitarianism, where freedom is a facade and riddled with product placements.

Unexplained anomalies begin to appear during this time of global oppression. Anomalies that, if entered, give birth to a new version of you, a doppelgänger that when met with its other namesake will result in a second space-time altering anomalous event. Which is sort of unexplained in the movie but seems to work out visually in the end anyway. Since no one has a real clue, this event has to be a natural anomaly and therefore inescapable. A supposed act of God so to speak.

The first anomaly/vortex was open, so even if officer Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott) was to shoot himself in the end, the cycle would eventually repeat itself with another unsuspecting person entering the vortex, meaning the rapture was inevitable. Hence the reason why the few of the character’s who were in the know, embraced it. It proved that there was a divine power at work. Eureka! Or maybe I’m missing the point?

Richard Kelly also made it as a comic book that might be good, or better even.

‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ Trailer… in Graphic Novel Form [movie trailer]

•August 14, 2010 • Leave a Comment

So good, must watch again! Clever YouTuber Max Ketchum has made a recreation of the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Theatrical Trailer using only frames from Bryan Lee O’Malley graphic novel:

I used images from the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel and matched the trailer as best I could. Also you may see things here that differ from the trailer and that is because there are things in the movie that aren’t in the graphic novel and vice versa. Enjoy. –theMrblonde2010

Guy With Metal Detector Finds $1 Million in Roman Coins

•August 13, 2010 • Leave a Comment

What an amazing find. I should give metal detectorists more respect from now on.

Treasure hunter Dave Crisp, centre in purple T-shirt, oversees the dig in the field in Frome

Considering how thrilled I was just to find this story, I can only imagine the delirious, all-consuming excitement felt by Dave Crisp, a British hospital chef, when his metal detector uncovered this pot of 52,000 Roman coins.

Crisp was lolling with his detector in a field in southwestern England when he made the discovery, eventually unearthing some 50,000 silver and bronze coins dating from 253 to 293 AD. Over 700 of them bear the face of Marcus Aurelius Carausius, a Roman general who ruled Britain and was the first to make coins in the region.

Crisp, a self-described “metal detectorist,” explained that he would have to share the coins’ estimated $1 million value with the farmer who owns the land on which they were buried. Still, I imagine that the prospect of a $500,000 payday will be enough to inspire a whole new generation of detectorists. [CNN]

one commenter had this to say:

He must be good at those ‘How many jelly beans are in the jar?’ games, cuz I don’t see 52,000 coins in there.

That pretty much ‘sums’ this ‘up’ …out of the ground… (that was kind of a joke btw)

‘Love’ & ‘Self Respect’ is the name of the game in “Scott Pilgrim Vs The World” (which is; I must add in this lengthily title; EPIC!!!) I Lesbians This Movie [cameos & easter eggs / fin’s movie review]

•August 12, 2010 • Leave a Comment

‎’Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ is highly entertaining and so much fun! Watched an early morning screening with my lady friend (2nd date more or less) with 3 other randoms sitting in the back of the cinema, and it kicked!!!

Wasn’t even bothered that there was no-one to rip my ticket in half, as if I could have just walked into the cinema without paying Grrr. No I’m glad I have a keepsake ticket stub… really

It goes without saying, like most films (duh) this movie wont be for everyone, but for the Gamers, Geeks, Nerds, Dorks and Dweebs out there, Scott Pilgrim’s internal video-game-logic and comic book feel (Onomatopoeias RULE) will have you searching the video store for more of/like it. Which there isn’t. Soooo, just play more games I’d say.

This may be tip-toeing into SPOILER ALERT territory but you’re big enough to stop yourself from reading and doing drugs and junk – Just keep your eyes and ears open for pop-culture references galore with a great many hidden bonuses.

Actually, I’d like to share a few things that I noticed right heres right nows:

Young actress Mae Whitman (very talented) plays Roxy Richter one of the ‘seven evil exes’ (don’t give me that, you’ve all seen the trailers) she also played as Ann Veal in the TV series Arrested Development alongside Michael Cera as his on-again/off-again girlfriend – totally not a coincidence.

Also, hers is one of the best fight scenes in the movie. One of them. Try not to fall asleep *Ahem* 😉

During Pilgrim’s bus ride with Ramona Flowers, the blurred street-lights in the background were in the shape of lovehearts. One of those ‘attention to detail’ things I really really love seeing in movies:

Watchout for awesome things popping up on-screen like a HUD (heads-up-display):

Also keep an eye out for cool t-shirts like N64, AstroBoy and the Rock Band logo for bass guitar (above) incidentally, the instrument that Scott plays:

Pilgrim’s band Sex Bob-omb is named for the explosive enemies from Mario:

Another band in the Scott Pilgrim universe is ‘The Clash at Demonhead’ which refers to this 1989 NES game of the same name:

One of the more ultra-random appearances has to be the threat of the Vegan Police, a squadron of law enforcement officials that may or may not have a bone to pick with Todd Ingram, played by “Superman Returns” star Brandon Routh – such a douche

The P-Word of L-Word S-Word – Stats are an obvious reference to role-playing games:

And last but not least; in fact first, is the awesome 8-bit font video game-style typeface Studio opener. Seriously, it’s awesome.

‘Definitely’ the best representation of why the comic books are so fantastic and why movies are and excellent medium of entertainment, adaptation and, enlightenment? *Ahem* Kudos Edgar Wright for experimenting with the (already wicked) material, TOP SCORE!

Watching This Movie Will Make You Cooler, really…

Every Lightsaber Ignition & Retraction EVER in Chronological Order [movie montage]

•August 10, 2010 • Leave a Comment

This suddenly all seems sort of, homoerotic… Every on-screen lightsaber ignition in movie chronological order:

That video only reminded me how good the originals are compared to the watered-down CGI-porn-heavy wrap-up titles (Phantom had it’s moments though).

“I only put in clips where you can see the lightsaber ignite/retract and not just hear it. Also only put in clips where the lightsaber is intentionally ignited/retracted — 6 total hours to complete.”

A Gigantic Tunnel Of Books – ‘Scanner’ by Matej Kren

•August 8, 2010 • Leave a Comment

As part of a local children’s book fair, Slovakian artist Matej Kren was invited by the Museum of Modern Art in Bologna, Italy to install a massive fortress composed of thousands upon thousands of books:

The piece — “Scanner” — is meant to evoke “a sensation of sublime terror, an alteration referring to a puzzling infinity itself created to destabilize conventional spatial habits.”

…Uh, what he said [more photos found here]

“you’re right Ray… No human being would stack books that way” hehe

My Contributed Shared-Lunch Lamys [F]

•August 6, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Had a shared lunch today. I was going to make a Pavlova, but I had a last-minute change of stomach. Lamingtons! Somewhat in keeping with tradition, and tasty!

A Lamington is a sponge cake in the shape of a cuboid, coated in a layer of traditionally chocolate icing then desiccated coconut. Lamingtons are sometimes served as two halves with a layer of cream and/or strawberry jam between, and are commonly found in Australasian outlets such as cafes, lunch bars, bakeries, and supermarkets (and awesome guy’s kitchens)

The raspberry variety is more common in New Zealand, while a lemon variety has been encountered in Australia.

…Needed more cream, and I only got 2 myself I did I did
