‘Apocalyptic’ Red Dust Storm in Australia – You know what they say; Red sky in the morning…

•September 24, 2009 • 1 Comment

Amazing! This is not a hollywood special effect nor is it a photoshop hue, but practically science fiction come reality: The worst dust storm Sydney has seen in 70 years –

An enhanced colour satellite image shows the dust storm covering eastern Australia earlier today.

A huge outback dust storm – 500 km (310 mi) wide by 1,000 km (620 mi) long – swept across eastern Australia and blanketed Sydney on Wednesday, September 23rd, disrupting flights and ground transportation and forcing people indoors for shelter from the hazardous air, gale-force winds, and in some places hailstorms.

Those few who ventured outside, especially at dawn, were greeted by a Martian sky, familiar landmarks blotted out by the heavy red dust blowing by.

Sky Burials or Ritual Dissection — Funerary practice in Tibet

•September 24, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Sky burial or ritual dissection was once a common funerary practice in Tibet wherein a human corpse is cut in specific locations and placed on a mountaintop, exposing it to the elements or the mahabhuta and animals — especially to birds of prey:

In Tibet the practice is known as jhator, which literally means, “giving alms to the birds.”

The majority of Tibetans adhere to Buddhism, which teaches rebirth. There is no need to preserve the body, as it is now an empty vessel. Birds may eat it, or nature may let it decompose. So the function of the sky burial is simply the disposal of the remains. In much of Tibet the ground is too hard and rocky to dig a grave, and with fuel and timber scarce, a sky burial is often more practical than cremation.

wow

Having been acculturated to western beliefs, I can imagine this being difficult for many to *gulp* swallow. I’ve had some time to think about this, and I have to say that it isn’t good or bad, it is natural and a life affirming testament of the belief that there is a soul which continues to exist outside of the corporeal body when it is no longer functional — So why not let nature have it? It’s either the birds or the worms, right.

SILENT HILL 2 [coming soon]

IT’S OFFICIAL!!! There will be a follow-up. Love the games. Love the movie. There’s no way Silent Hill 2 can disappoint me. [Just please no Uwe Boll] And bring back Radha Mitchell as Rose Da Silva and director Christophe Gans if you can:

Roger Avary and Samuel Hadida of Davis Films (Solomon Kane) are set to shoot Silent Hill 2 next year after Resident Evil 4.

No word on who is directing the project but it goes without saying that we’d love to see Christophe Gans back on board. While certainly not a flawless film, Gans made the first outing a truly original piece of horror filmmaking. That fog horn still haunts me man. – agentorange/quietearth

“The original, based on the Konami game, centered on a woman who travels to a desolate town to seek help for her ailing daughter only to find supernatural occurrences taking place there.”

Maria from Silent Hill 2 game and Cameron Diaz [ don't they look similar?]

And if they’re going in this direction, I think Cameron Diaz would make a great Maria.

Though the bird is a traditional symbol of peace it was left behind by a test launch of a solid fuel missile that is able to carry multiple warheads.

Astronomer James Young captured the stunning pictures with a camera using a digi telephoto lens.

The astonishing example of twilight phenomena was recorded from Table Mountain Observatory in California as the rocket was carried thousands of miles over the Pacific ocean from its launch pad at Vandenberg Air Force Base. [DailyMail]

Secret Festival Projection

Not a huge fan of the heart motif, but what an awesome projection: Best part is the Pac Man and Pinball sequences at 3:30

We got invited along to do some video mapping projections at a secret festival in the North East of England. The theme and logo of the party was the heart. We spent a couple of weeks in the studio creating the show which opened the party.
