Disney Buys Marvel!?! [WTF]

While Disney’s purchase of Marvel Entertainment surprised the WORLD this morning, how many people really saw it coming?

This is bad JUJU, and possibly a sign of the coming Apocalypse…

 

It might be the most unexpected, and biggest, news story of the year: Disney have bought Marvel Comics for $4 billion in stock and cash. Good news for shareholders, perhaps, but what does this mean for everyone else?

News broke early this morning that the Walt Disney Co. have acquired Marvel Entertainment in a move that, according to the official press release on the subject, “highlights Disney’s strategic focus on quality branded content, technological innovation and international expansion to build long-term shareholder value.”

The deal will give the House of Mouse the rights to all of Marvel’s characters, but current licensing deals with movie studios like Fox (X-Men) and Sony (Spider-Man) will stay in place, according to this morning’s investor conference call to discuss the sale. [io9]

NASA’s Coolest Mission Patches

Perhaps the best thing about NASA’s military provenance is that the agency picked up the armed services’ habit of making patches. Some are cooler than most:

NASA selected a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle to represent the Multi-Purpose Logistics Modules of the International Space Station project because three of the four modules share names with those characters.

The modules were built by the Italian Space Agency, so they are named after the Italian Renaissance artists, rather than the turtles. [Turtle Power!]

And these two lovable space oddities:

NASA hasn’t shied away from using well-known figures on its patches in recent years. In 2003, Daffy Duck/Duck Dodgers and Marvin Martian made appearances on two patches for Mars Exploration Rover missions.

I had this sitting in my favourites for a while. I like it. The way it works is relative to the message it’s conveying: “It happens when nobody is watching.”

Amnesty International has installed a new anti-domestic-abuse ad fixture in Hamburg, Germany which is equal parts clever and shocking: when you look at the photo, it’s a smiling couple; when you look away, it’s a dude punchin’ a lady.

The billboard works by scanning its proximity with an eye-tracking camera, which triggers an image switch on the display panel when it senses someone looking at it. The change only occurs after a brief delay, so that observers understand what’s going on, and get the message.

It’s a fantastically effective concept, and a brilliant use of technology. Kind of sad, then, that it’s probably award bait, and doomed to be a lone installation, according to Copyranter.

And here’s Keira Knightley’s Women’s Aid – Domestic Violence 2009 Ad. Apparently it has been banned in most countries because it’s too violent:
