Japan’s Winter Light Show

•November 20, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Last Saturday, 4.5 million LEDs lit up the Nabana no Sato theme park of Kuwana, Japan, kicking off their annual Winter Light Show that runs until March 8th. This year’s theme is flowers, illuminated in 64 billion colours that are reported to change colour so quickly that they actually resemble a river more than a field of blooming plants.

LED lighting

An estimated 4.5 million light-emitting diodes offer an amazing spectacle at the Nabana no Sato theme park in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture, on Saturday. The annual winter light show is scheduled to run until March 8.

The water illumination is out of this world. Here the beautiful sound of the river with vivid colour changing-the-art LED technology enables a production of 64 billion colours. The rapidly changing colours actually look more like the flow of the river in front of your eyes. The pond is located in the heart of the Village but can be seen from all over the place.

Snake In A Box

•November 20, 2008 • Leave a Comment

In true gamer fashion, a 42-year-old Turkish man has escaped from a German prison Solid Snake style by making use of a cardboard box:

cardboard escape - MGS

The man hid in the box at the end of a shift of his prison job of making stationery and was carried out by a courier service along with other boxes. The inmate then cut through a tarp in the truck and jumped out shortly after the vehicle left the prison grounds. The driver eventually noticed the tarp flapping in the wind and reported the cut to the police.

Ms Beate Peters, the chief warden of the Willich prison presumes that the man had accomplices outside the prison, and a manhunt is underway throughout western Germany. ~ via BBC NEWS

Wait a minute — a prison job making stationery? No wonder the poor bastard wanted to escape so bad. Pressing license plates I can understand, but making stationery? That’s just cruel and unusual. Let’s celebrate the convicted drug dealer’s victory vicariously — EPIC WIN! Now someone catch the bastard.

Tool bag lost on spacewalkAstronaut Outside Space Station Loses Tool Bag

In this image from NASA TV, a tool kit bag, center, as seen through the helmet camera of astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper, floats away from the International Space Station after she lost hold of it during a procedure during a 6 1/2-hour scheduled space walk outside the space station, Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008.

A spacewalking astronaut whose grease gun erupted in a backpack-sized tool bag accidentally let go of the tote outside the international space station Tuesday, and it floated off along with everything in it.

It was one of the largest items ever to be lost by a spacewalker, and occurred during an unprecedented attempt to clean and lube a gummed-up joint on a solar panel.

Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper was just starting to work on the joint when the mishap occurred.

She said her grease gun exploded, getting the dark gray stuff all over her helmet camera and gloves. In the process of wiping off her gloves, the bag slipped out of her grip, and she lost all her other tools.

“Oh, great,” she mumbled.

Sexy Eyes

Straight up; creepy-crawlies creep me out. Photography however mends said creepiness with a charm and respect for ecology. …Nope, still scared.

Salticidae [Jumping Spider] is a true hunter among the spider family. Instead of building a web and sitting on it, these spiders hunt actively relying on their exceptional vision. Such highly developed visual sense and fantastic eye arrangement play a significant role, when females choose males.

Not to be outdone, the males, too, have very colourful displays and well-ritualized mating techniques, as you can see on the following pictures:

Leonardo DiCaprio Won’t Star in Either Akira or Ninja Scroll

•November 19, 2008 • Leave a Comment

In the movie industry, the production companies are actually the ones who make the movies, the big studios just distribute them. One of the production companies, called Appian Way, is run by Leonardo DiCaprio himself, and has been picking up the rights to high profile projects left and right.

Given that DiCaprio owns and operates the company, he has a say in whether or not he stars in any of the projects that they produce, so when Appian picked up both Akira and Ninja Scroll, the assumption was made that DiCaprio was interested in potentially starring in one or the other (or both). However, MTV debunks that rumor today and confirms that he’s only going to produce – and make sure they stay true to their story.

Ninja Scroll - Dicaprio - Akira

DiCaprio told MTV that we’re waiting for the final draft of the script [for Akira],” which showed up on El Mayimbe’s radar not too long ago. He continues:

“I’m a big fan of Japanese anime – that and another project called Ninja Scroll we’re trying to get developed and made into a movie, and I know there a lot of loyal fans out there of the project and die-hard fans, so we’re going to try to do the best job we possibly can and we’re not going to make the movie until the script is in the right shape.”

Thank goodness for that a! He’s right – die-hard anime fans know that it’ll be challenging to stay true to the story in both films, since Akira and Ninja Scroll are not only groundbreaking classics, but very edgy and controversial.

It’s at least very reassuring to know that DiCaprio is a big fan of both animes and will make sure they’re treated well. That’s actually more than reassuring, considering he owns the company that is making both movies.

Akira is a great anime, but it also has the potential to be a great live-action movie too.

And a message for you; yes YOU! Even if you don’t like anime –Watch Akira.

Son Takes The Term “MILF” Way Too Literally

•November 19, 2008 • Leave a Comment

The 26-year-old man moved from Western Australia in February this year to live with his mother in Darwin.

On May 29, they were watching television when he told her: “Why don’t women want me. I can’t get no women here,” the Northern Territory Supreme Court was told.

The son then pulled his mother’s pants down, took a condom out of his wallet, and had sex with her.

They had sex again before the mother got into her wheelchair and went to her bedroom.

The woman – who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and has been dependent on a wheelchair for the past seven years – told her doctor about the incident the following day and the man was arrested.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of having sex with a person knowing that the person was his mother and faces three years in prison with a non-parole period of six months.

The mother said she felt “betrayed, lost, lonely and very upset”, and that the son, who was drunk at the time of the offence, was “extremely remorseful”.

She also said the fact that he had been raised by his father in Western Australia meant the two did not share “a normal mother-child bond”. […what a douche]

The case is the first of its kind in the Northern Territory.

ZUBBLES!!!

Z U B B L E S

For over ten years, researchers have battled to discover the way to make colored bubbles. [Not the bubble gum kind] Mission Accomplished!

Red

Now they come in colors. Not that I expect them to be flavored i.e. red is cherry, green is lime, etc. I expect they still retain that extra special soap flavor.

But they actually have true color now! These aren’t the colors that a normal bubble would cause by refracting light. These are truly colored-purple, red, green, and more. It’s pretty cool looking.

I want to eat it

Past experiments that infused color into the thin membrane of soap that forms a bubble have resulted in several mishaps-mostly due to what happens when the bubble pops. The chemicals used would stain practically everything, from clothing to faces. Chemical burns were not uncommon [youch].

Then there was the weight factor. The chemicals used for coloration would sink to the bottom of the bubble, weighing it down. And what’s a non-floating bubble worth? Not much.

Inventor Tim Kehoe carried many of these woes. He even managed to turn his eyeballs blue when an experimental bubble popped in his face.

Blue

The first colored bubble was invented in Kehoe’s kitchen; it was blue. He actually called his wife into the room to see the bubble because, after experimenting with hundreds of formulas over the years, he thought he was hallucinating. But this variation still carried a major issue: it stained everything it touched.

So he went back to the drawing board and after various other ventures [working for a toy firm] he started his own independent toy company with business partners Guy Haddleton.

Enter Ram Sabnis, a dye chemist who thought that Kehoe’s goal was obtainable. In February of 2005, he broke the code and devised a manner to create colored bubbles that easily washed away upon bursting and did not leave any residue behind.

Ta-da

Kehoe is hoping to roll these bubbles out on the market by February 2009.
