Manukau Film Festival Wrap [F]

•November 15, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Last weekend (Saturday 8th) I attended (unfashionably late) the Wrap event for the Manukau Film Festival held at the historic Metro Theatre, Mangere, Auckland. With no windows to peer through, it took me a stroll around the whole building before I realized this was the place.

Metro Theatre

There was an official MFF poster on the front door but some guy ripped it down while I was walking along the pavement.

Now inside, and welcomed by that guy; Brett Stirling, Project Manager of Manukau’s inaugural Film Festival; I was pleased to meet him. We spoke briefly after the event ended and he was confident that the Manukau Film Festival would be an Annual Event.

Let’s hope so; even if the Council has no interest in supporting such a thing, which sounds very unlikely; Manukau film and regional south Auckland arts is growing renown.

Manukau Film Festival

The main hall was dark with a projection screen on stage, near 20 seats on the floor and a table of food and wine set up at the back. I leant against the back wall drinking orange juice when approached by Leilani Kake, Creative Director of the Manukau Film Festival. Then it didn’t bother me so much that I was late, because we got to talk about the festival.

Leilani Kake is described as “one of the most exciting contemporary Pacific visual artists practising in New Zealand today” definitely a name to keep an eye open for.

From a very [very very] short call-out for short film submissions [Aug-Sep] they received over 30. [A lot] From those 30 films, Leilani selected 21; some being turn-down due to graphic violence/language and APRA [Australasian Performing Right Association] related copyright issues.

The quality of films was of high standard, entertaining, mature and interesting. Among the selection of films were Taika Waititi’s “TWO CARS, ONE NIGHT” and the New Zealand Premiere of Brett Wagner’s “CHIEF”.

I guess we have Leilani to thank for all this, and man am I thankful to have been a part. Overall, The Manukau Film Festival was a definite success.

Congrats to Leilani, Brett, Creative Tangata Productions, Manukau Arts, Manukau City Council, participating Filmmakers, event Supporters and Philanthropists.

Thank you!

Besson Plans Epic Return To Science Fiction!

Luc Besson

The Fifth Element director Luc Besson is planning to start making a new science fiction movie next year, he told Collider.

It’s an epic saga, and it might be a trilogy or just a stand-alone film. He’s also not sure whether he’ll do it with a Hollywood studio, or make it in France. “It’s a big story,” he says, and what shape it takes will depend on the story and the characters.

Besson has been rather silent as a director over the past decade and has only directed three films since “Element” and none of them were science-fiction.

Mondochiwan Guardian - Coooool

The Fifth Element was an awesomely stylized picture. The plot line wasn’t complex because it wasn’t that sort of movie. I’d even go as far to say that it was… perfect.

Me Fifth Element - Supreme Being

A brilliant science fiction pop corn flick. I still remember walking out of the cinema at the sweet age of 11; I couldn’t stop talking about Zorg’s ZF-1 Pod Weapons System! [that cool gun]

All I can say is, he better hire French fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier!

Casting: Calling All Carls

•November 15, 2008 • Leave a Comment

If you or someone you know looks like Carl, this could be your shot at immortality. Sweaty, hairy, horny immortality.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force

Fat, bald Foreigner fans unite — this is your time to shine. Aqua Teen Hunger Force is hosting an open casting call for the role of Carl, the neighbor who loves porn and hookers. That lucky, lucky actor will appear in the ATHF live action episode. The casting call is open until December 1, and I imagine this is strictly America only. [obviously]

Adult Swim’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force may be a trio of fast-food jackasses, but it wouldn’t be anything without its human foil, Carl, the group’s hirsute, horny neighbor who is hurt, mutilated or even killed every episode.

Send in your video tryouts over at Adult Swim’s ATHF site.

President Bush Gives Nation The Shocker Sign

Rumor has it that this is President Bush giving the ASU hand sign at an event honoring the 2008 NCAA sports champions. But I think we all know this is the president letting us all know that when he has two in the pink, he also likes to toss one in the stink.

EPIC FAIL!

Dave Grohl drums for The Prodigy

•November 14, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Dave Grohl

“Dave Grohl is apparently returning to his role as a jobbing drummer to the stars. The Foo Fighters frontman has, perhaps wisely, announced that he is resting the band for a while after last year’s Wembley Stadium mega-gig in support of their Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace album. But he hasn’t been letting the grass grow under his feet.

The former Nirvana and one-time Queens of the Stone Age drummer has lent his services as sticksman to the Prodigy.

Grohl appears on their forthcoming album Invaders Must Die, due in March, on a track entitled Run With the Wolves.

Liam Howlett told Kerrang:

“Dave emailed us to see what we were up to and offered his services. It was really inspiring. It’s definitely the most venomous track on the album. Keith really goes for it on lead vocals. It’s wicked.”

Of the follow-up to 2004’s underwhelming Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned, Howlett said bullishly:

“All fucking bands say their new record’s their best, but this just feels really triumphant for us. It’s on fire. It’s all about the three of us together and what we can do. You know what we deal with – it’s beats in a predominantly electronic style and it’s full of fucked-up guitars.”

The album will be released through the band’s own Take Me To The Hospital imprint of Cooking Vinyl in March.”

Goody Goody Gum Drops

Less than 10mins from the dairy back to my house, my Goody Goody was melting through the thin layer of chocolate coating. [drool] Not saying that was bad thing or that I took time out to examine it. Just saying you get what you pay for. $2 and well worth it!
