Angel of the West

•October 23, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Julian Voss-Andreae’s “Angel of the West” was inspired by the striking similarity of the human antibody molecule (the key molecule in our immune system) in proportion and function as well: It has ‘arms’ that grab on to viruses etc. with hand-like region that are highly variable and fit perfectly for each new intruder.

“My idea was to use the Leonardo man (‘Vitruvian Man’, 1490) in the circle, replace the man with the molecule (in my mitered cut technique) and use Leonardo’s composition, extrapolated into 3d. To subtly strengthen that connection I made ‘rays’ under ‘wings’ that converge visually where the man’s head would be.”

James Cameron is still neck-deep in perfecting his 3-D space masterpiece, Avatar. But work on his next project, a 3-D animated version of the classic manga Battle Angel, is already well underway as well. Concept artist Mark Goener gave an interview to 3-D movie blog MarketSaw, and talked about developing a unique look for this story of “cyber-youth in moral conflict.”

In The Pipe, Five By Five (literally)

We can understand getting turned on at the car wash if a bunch of soaked, bikini-clad babes are squeezing their sponges over your windshield, but something more mysterious must have triggered it for a Michigan man who was recently arrested for “receiving sexual favors from a vacuum” at a drive-through car wash.

The 29-year-old Hoover lover was arrested Thursday about 90 miles northwest of Detroit, after a resident reported suspicious activity at the car wash around 6:45 a.m. We’re not sure what alerted the resident to the sexy goings-on in the car wash (the sweet sounds of Marvin Gaye?) but an approaching officer caught the man in the act and promptly arrested him.

TVNZKKK [F]

I sent a complaint to the broadcasting committee over Michael Bay’s actioner BadBoys2 on the 24th September, that reads:

20 Minutes into the screening of “Bad Boys 2” last night, the word “Fuck” was censored (understandable) but not the word “Nigger.”

Personally I’m not a huge fan of Director Michael Bay nor am I big on cliché Hollywood action dialogue; but your broadcast movie censorship of “Bad Boys 2” last night was a double standard. “Fuck” and “Nigger” are both offensive terms and the fact that one word was censored over the other upset me, regardless of their use in context.

Here’s what they said Today:

The TVNZ Appraiser who viewed the movie and made these cuts, also made the decision to leave the word nigger in the broadcast. She considered that the use of the word nigger was in context for the scene involving members of the Ku Klux Klan assaulting the black policeman and that to cut the word nigger would have rendered the exchange nonsensical.’

They declined to uphold my complaint. Fair enough, can’t say I was all too anal about it in the first place. They felt it exemplified the KKK. …Nonsensical, humph, A better decision would have been to play a better movie.

Electric 6: Album Release

Listen: MySpace

This Detroit group first came on the radar for most listeners with their single, “Gay Bar”. Their new songs, however, are bound to earn just as much attention. Their new album, Flashy“, is so aptly named. If there’s any adjective I can think of to describe Electric 6-it’s ‘flashy’. So if you’re in the mood for some songs that will make you laugh tears but still have a good enough groove that you’ll find yourself dancing-do yourself a favor and pick up this album.
