Dr Sketchy’s Burlesque Anti-Art School Life Drawing Sessions Presents ‘Hello Halloween Dolly!’

•September 30, 2013 • Leave a Comment

Ever wondered if Marilyn Monroe would lose any of her sex appeal if she was a zombie? Want to find out? Dr. Sketchy began in Brooklyn and is now a worldwide art community with a burlesque twist, and there happens to be a faction right here in Auckland.

Dr Sketchy is a life drawing class with a more enticing, geek orientated vibe. The Wine Cellar will be hosting @ 7pm, Tue, October 01… NOOOOOOOOO I have major study and an essay to do! Decisions, decisions…

In the spirit of paganism & candy we bring you the ever devious glamazon of darkness: Dolly DeStory. Dr Sketchy’s Burlesque anti-art school life drawing sessions, held once a month in the Wine Cellar/Whammy Bar, St Kevin’s Arcade. Fun evening of burlesque girlies in skimpy outfits! Wine and liquor is to be consumed! Art to be created by the quick fingers of many busy art monkeys.

Bring your favourite tools: pens, paper, pencils, crayons, glue, cameras and/or finger paint. Dr. Sketchy is open to anyone, regardless of creed, colour and artistic style.

7pm start at the Wine Cellar. $10 on the door to feed the model. If you’re good, & be good I mean totally messed up, you’ll probably get candy. Please note, we are becoming rather popular & as such, we recommend you come early to ensure a seat!

Experience completely unnecessary, but a sense of cheeky fun a must. Dr. Sketchys will be once a month, $10 on the door (to feed the models).

#BatDad Vine Compilation

Jen! Your man is a vigilantly! BatDad is one of the better Viners out there whose shenanigans are innocent and funny. Can you believe he is a father of four children? I thought he must have eyes on the back of his cowl, but I guess that comes with the job of being a father — You are the BatDad the internet deserves:

Vine is a mobile app owned by Twitter that enables its users to create and post short video clips. Viners tend to prank, create fake personas, cosplay, spawn memes and perform armature stunts and do just about anything to hit that fleeting 6 seconds worth of fame. Everyone’s a comedian, but there are some super crafty people out there doing some very experimental stuff within the limitations. There will be more Vines to come, just as soon as I figure out how to embedded them that is; YouTube will have to do.

I would be disappointed in a film if it incorporated some piece of machinery that didn’t act up, and so would Duncan Robson, the same man behind the zoom and enhance cliché compilation. He has compiled yet another revealing review of a staple cinema plot device — a technological version of Murphy’s law, and how to solve it:

On This Day 26 Years Ago, the First Episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation Premiered

I still watch it. THAT’S MY JAM! When I was a child, during the opening credits, I used to run to the back of the hallway then sprint down into the livingroom and jump on the couch just as the Enterprise shot across the screen, then I’d try for the hallway again before the Enterprise made another flyby, and repeat. Funny kid. Only time my parents let me stand on the furniture, come to think of it. This show was ahead of its time.

“Defined Lines,” I Know You Want It – Auckland Uni Law Students Parody Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”

•September 28, 2013 • Leave a Comment

I thought the video was good but I didn’t realize how good until Aljazeera’s The Stream covered a story on Grace Brown’s Project Unbreakable, an online photo essay exhibit that features images of women and men holding signs with sentences that their rapist said before, during, or after their assault. Word for word, some things quoted are lyrics in “Blurred Lines.”

This tongue-in-cheek parody was part of Auckland University’s law revue, a show of 40 skits performed at SkyCity Theatre last month. Video contains coarse language, and a purple vibrator:

Adelaide Dunn, Olivia Lubbock and Zoe Ellwood are a group of law students who call themselves the “Law Revue girls” and hail from right here in Auckland, New Zealand. They took on Thicke’s number one hit following criticism which described the original song as advocating sexual abuse and “blurring the lines” between consensual and non-consensual sex.

Chlöe from 95bFM’s The Wire spoke with Adelaide Dunn, regarding the video, misogyny, and the state of modern feminism. Quite insightful. You can listen to the full recording here: 95bfm/chloe-adelaide.mp3 (10m44s, 9.8MB, broadcast 3 September 2013)

Unbelievable. I can’t believe this rubbish passes as popular music nowadays — cowbell, snare, hihat, chauvinistic lyrics, Pharrell…

Goldroom “Fifteen” (feat. Chela) & BANKS “Change”

Floating through the slipstream, alright. Not gonna lie; this song has lullabied me to sleep several nights in a row now:

Banks too:

Sultry. No lullabies tonight though, I’m pulling an all-nighter for the essay that’s due tomorrow. You’d think a guy would learn a lesson. Sheesh, Fin. Where’s that coffee pot!

Chela “Romanticise” & “Plastic Gun” [music video]

Got me a new skateboard from Aldi, 17 buck! Bargain boyz

I think I’m in love. “Romanticise” is a synthtastic breakout single from lively new Australian act, Chela. She sings upbeat lyrics while pulling off some of the coolest choreographed dance moves I’ve ever seen in a music video in a long time, making me feel all at once jealous of her friends and her mad talent:

If “Romanticise” and GoldroomsFifteen is anything to go by then Chela is no-doubt one chic Aussie sparkler we can hope to expect a great many bright things from. You’ve got yourself an admirer 👍(ノ^_^)ノ♪ I’m loving Plastic Gun atm too; great sound:

The ‘Romanticise’ EP is available for download on iTunes and features remixes by Gold Fields, Collarbones, Boys Get Hurt, Le Bruce and Fascinator (the original is the best still):

An Eagle’s POV Soaring Through a French Valley

Scenic footage of a GoPro camera strapped to a flying eagle

Wow. Take in this breathtaking mountain range above the Mer de Glace glacier in Chamonix, France, as if you were riding on the back of an Eagle:

To soar majestically like a bird isn’t so hard to imagine any more. Seagulls, the dumb cousin in the bird family aren’t as majestic nor demonstrate the same level of finesse in the air as eagles do but can be similarly enjoyable to watch…kind of:

Lucky that gull dropped it above ground. I just had a scary thought; what if people started putting GoPros on their cats?! …That’s all I’ve got. I’m sorry for wasting your time.

One student’s daydream comes vividly to life during Biology class - Best Animation Winner from SXSW 2012

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, doodling is not only cool but a healthy brain function that improves concentration and recall, this Biology student’s daydream might be a bit too vivid to be considered productive to classwork though:
