8% of Human DNA Comes from a 40 Million Year-Old Virus

A team of scientists led by Keizo Tomonaga of Osaka University determined that a virus dating from 40 million years ago is embedded in human DNA.
This infection, known as the bornavirus, might be the cause of schizophrenia and passes from generation to generation inside human cellular nuclei, filling out 8% of human genetic code:
The assimilation of viral sequences into the host genome is a process referred to as endogenization. This occurs when viral DNA integrates into a chromosome of reproductive cells and is subsequently passed from parent to offspring. Until now, retroviruses were the only viruses known to generate such endogenous copies in vertebrates. But Feschotte said that scientists have found that non-retroviral viruses called bornaviruses have been endogenized repeatedly in mammals throughout evolution.
Bornavirus (BDV) owes its name to the town of Borna, Germany, where a virus epidemic in 1885 wiped out a regiment of cavalry horses. BDV infects a range of birds and mammals, including humans. It is unique because it infects only neurons, establishing a persistent infection in its host’s brain, and its entire life cycle takes place in the nucleus of the infected cells. [ScienceDaily]

It’s not often that a woman will say that her husband gave her a gigantic pile of crap for her birthday — and she loved it.
But Carole Kleis isn’t just any woman — she’s the wife of a farmer, and a little natural fertilizer doesn’t bother her a bit, even if this particular usage is rather unusual.
“He’s done weird things before for birthdays,” she said. “But maybe not this weird.”
It took Dick Kleis of Zwingle, Iowa, about three hours to spell out ‘HAP B DAY LUV U’ — shorthand, he says, for “Happy Birthday, Love You” in 120,000 pounds of manure.
“I was going to put a heart out there after the happy birthday, but I ran out of manure,” he said.
“It’s not hard. Any manure will work but the good, soft, gushy, warm stuff works the best. It kind of melts the snow.” –

From Star Trek to Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to GUNDAM, Warner Brothers Looney Tunes to Disney, MARVEL UNIVERSE to The Simpsons, Wizard of Oz to Sesame Street and SpongeBob to Nintendo – PEZ has it all!
Curtis Allina is the inventor of the forever popular PEZ dispenser. He passed away Tuesday 5th 2010 at the age of 87 at his home in Olympia, Washington. Heart Failure. This is one legacy that will live on, refill, anon forever.
Originally, PEZ weren’t aimed at kids at all. They were mints – the name PEZ comes from the German word for peppermint, Pfefferminz – and when the dispensers arrived on the scene, they were supposed to resemble cigarette lighters as the candies were marketed as an alternative to smoking.
Then along came Curtis Allina who, back in 1955, convinced the PEZ company to put the whimsical heads on their dispensers. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Today PEZ is a highly collectible pop-cultural artifact. Not to mention tasty treat, for children and adults.
…I’m going to the dairy to PEZ out in honour of Mr Curtis Allina.
Curtis Allina was born Aug. 15, 1922, in Prague, and raised in Vienna. Between 1941 and 1945, he and his family, Sephardic Jews, were forced into a series of concentration camps. Mr. Allina emerged at war’s end as his family’s sole survivor in Europe. Making his way to New York, he worked for a commercial meatpacker before joining Pez-Haas, as the company’s United States arm was then known, in 1953. [full story/nytimes]

Considered crazy by some at the time; today, this man is a legend. No surprise really that Futurama would pay homage to this man and his work. How awesome!
