8-Bit FLOYD MAYWEATHER’S PUNCH-OUT!!!

•May 3, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Can’t be bothered watching the fight in its entirety; this is pretty much an 8-bit recap:

huggin

The video below is the actual video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) that the video above parodies, and quite well I must say — PunchOut!! (パンチアウト!!, Panchi-Auto!!)

Some argue it is one of the best boxing games ever made, despite its graphics, but I don’t think those people have ever played the minigame, Ape Escape: Specter Boxing

ape escape Specter Boxing

Because that was the shit!! Monkeys fighting and shit. Hitting each other with their monkey hands in their monkey gloves. Monkey dodging. Getting hit and seeing monkey stars.

Fond Memories of Gunships & Incompetence [F]

•May 2, 2015 • Leave a Comment

1998’s Godzilla movie by German film director Roland Emmerich (the American remake of the Japanese classic daikaiju, ゴジラ, Gojira) was on television tonight. I didn’t watch it.

getsum

The advert for it did trigger a bout of laughter in me though. I remember being high as a mf and watching this movie in my friend’s bedroom, years ago. It is one of, if not, the most unintentionally hilarious scenes in blockbuster movie history, and on that day, man I completely lost my shit XD Do you want to know why? Watch these pilots get turnt up!!!

Funny shit. Needed some dubstep. Seriously though, that one pilot is literally shooting the shit out of people’s homes:

literally killing people right now

Utter nonsense. And I’m curious; is there a reason why the three pilots are of different ethic backgrounds? It is like a bad joke or something — OK so, one asian, one black and one white pilot fly into New York city. The black guy blows up the Chrysler Building, dies, the asian guy doesn’t know how to aim but opens fire on several residential apartments anyway, dies, and the white guy doesn’t mess up at all, he just dies because of the incompetence of his two wingmen. …I did say bad joke. I bet Godzilla gets it, that troll. All of it is ridiculous. This movie sux. I like Jean Reno though, he is all good.

I won’t be harsh on the rest of the movie though because of the fond memories I have associated with it. Not referring to drugs this time; my mother took me into the city one night to watch it. I was a kid then, but I remember. It was raining and very dark. She wore a puffy, dull pink snow jacket. Kept me close. Warm. My little sister wasn’t there with us for some reason. After the movie, mum took me to an underground, all you can eat Pizza Hut restaurant in the Strand Arcade. Still raining. Hours spent and all I remember are these little moments. The meal came with a rubber hand puppet, a bust of Godzilla. I can remember lots of things my parents probably think I wouldn’t. But I do. …The movie itself however, is quite unmemorable.

The Penny Black

•May 1, 2015 • Leave a Comment

On this day in history, 175 years ago to be exact, the Penny Black was the world’s first adhesive postage stamp used in a public postal system. Pretty neat stuff, assuming your generation knows what stamps are used for, you with your WiFiy, Snapchatery, KiK tomfoolery! It was issued in Britain on 1 May 1840, for official use from 6 May of that year and features a profile of the Queen Victoria:

Penny_black

Teacher, inventor, social reformer and postal administrator, Rowland Hill, introduced the Penny Black adhesive stamp as a way to indicate pre-payment of postage, prior to his 1837 proposal to reform the British postal system, it was normal then for the recipient to pay postage on delivery — the price was calculated by the sheet and on the distance it travelled. Sending letters is now accessible to all and (hopefully) priced at an affordable flat rate.

To close, I found these passages by historian and Guardian columnist, to be quite sincere in regards to the special charm of letter writing, in contrast to the much abbreviated nature of digital correspondence:

“To a historian this stuff is gold dust. For buried away in the interstices of the most apparently banal note you will find all sorts of data, not just about how people lived, loved, ate and dressed a century ago, but – and this is the important bit – what they thought and felt about it all. Letters are a prompt to reflection and what cultural critics call “self-fashioning”. Put bluntly, we get to know who we are and what we think by writing about it to other people.

Deprive a generation of older people of the chance to send letters, and you not only lose a storehouse of fascinating archival material – you also deprive a huge and growing cohort the chance to find out how they feel about their lives at any given moment. And, perhaps just as importantly, you deprive older peoples’ correspondents the chance to connect with them deeply and meaningfully, on a level that the faux intimacy of email will never begin to match.” ~

Scheduling Future Notes [F]

When drafting a postmortem blog post that reads close to a premeditated death note…

Probably best to stop. Don’t revise. Just stop. Tell me I am not the only blogger who has done/thought about this though? If it can be arranged, isn’t it only logical to do so?

Write a final few words of endearment I mean, in the event of one’s own premature fatality. The idea just appeals to me is all. As an affirmation of our love for one another, our cares transcending far beyond our time is quite beautiful. Like a new memory resurfacing, or a lost love letter read for the first time. Aside from the odd spelling mistake, how could this possibly be a bad idea?

Stephen Hawking on One Direction (Ideas at the House)

Professor Stephen Hawking answers the important questions on stage at Sydney Opera House: “What is the cosmic effect on the universe of Zayn Malik leaving One Direction?”

To be living in a time alongside this great thinker is really quite extraordinary when you think about it. Here is the full event for your viewing pleasure — I advise you watch it:

There are few scientists that can be said to have touched the public imagination. Physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking is one such scientist. Professor Hawking appearings via holoam while his daughter Lucy and physicist Paul Davies join us live.

Kids Rocking out to Led Zeppelin on Xylophones & a High School Pep-Band Performs Rage Against the Machine

The 2014-15 Louisville Leopard Percussionists (4th-6th graders) rehearsing “Kashmir”, “The Ocean”, and “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin. The Louisville Leopard Percussionists began in 1993. They are a performing ensemble of approximately 55 student musicians, ages 7-12, living in and around Louisville, Kentucky. Each student learns and acquires proficiency on several instruments, such as marimbas, xylophone, vibraphone, drum set, timbales, congas, bongos and piano. Their performance is quite wonderful.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Doomsday Video

•April 28, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Apparently, America’s CNN network founder, Ted Turner, prepared a doomsday video to be broadcast in the event of a cataclysmic, life eradicating situation on Earth. It is crazy, presumptuous, pathetic, and crazy. What makes it all of those things isn’t just that Turner’s video is shit, but the mere idea of people watching TV — CNN to be specific — during such a time, should there even ever be one, is f’ing ridiculous! As customary, here is John Oliver lampooning the obvious, in immaculate satirical form:

I love that they asked Martin ‘Illusive Man’ Sheen to be the televised harbinger of humanity’s impending demise. Well played.

AKL BLOCK CLOUD PARTY 2015

•April 20, 2015 • 2 Comments

OK, yes, it is called Block Party, but I prefer Cloud Party, after the bubble-dome building it was held in…Wharf party even sounds more fitting. I went with the expectation it was going to be like the crowds found at any one of the underground night markets. Other than that, I was just gonna go with the flow, explore for a bit, and come back home.

Between the ferry terminal building and the Cloud, a crowd had amassed to watch a topless street performer entertain them with the assistance of a young volunteer, Saha. His buildup to a trick of chopping an apple in half on top of the little girl’s head, turned out to be just a prolonged joke. He knew how to hold an audience though I’ll give him that, but I wasn’t impressed. However, the little girl was cracking me up! Afterwards when the man was trying to split that apple in half using only his bare strength, Saha did the crazy twirl around her ear thing that I hope other people noticed, and when the man was trying to balance himself on a plank of wood atop a tin barrel, he asked the little girl to hand him the red hula-hoop she was standing in, so she picked it up, and just threw the thing at his legs like a Frisbee, zero fucks given, as if she was also waiting to be impressed. He didn’t fall though. Saha stole the show. I didn’t stick around, opting to beat the soon to be dissipating crowd, I wandered onward into the dome.

There were plenty of homemade artisan and vintage craft stalls selling neat and unique trinkets and artworks. Cool to see, but really not my cup of tea. Speaking of; there was some iced tea punch-bowl drinking ceremony/picnic thing happening on the opposite side, large-scale games of chess and jenga were being played, and like the empty stage was at the time, the Cloud felt rather spacious. I thought more noise was needed. More stuff to fill all that negative space. I definitely see potential for something greater.

Nearer to the back, I met Cleo who had a neat drawing setup that invited people to come doodle a picture of their dream desire and phantasies — PhantasyProject.com. I took a seat and stuck around for a bit (My name is Fin, and this is my picture):

When a trio of girls next to me started talking about D, I went back to the chess board. Game in progress. Hippy-esk music playing in the background. Two opponents taking a really long time to make their moves. Boredom setting in. Among the circles of friends standing beside me, I noticed the dancer from the last sketch session and wandered over to say hi. Hailey is her name. Cool character. Specks of glitter on her face. Really good vibe from her. She told me about the band playing next on stage, so I found myself a seat up front and hoped Hailey had good taste. “New Gum Sarn” was the band’s name:

Drums: Sophia Lawler-Dormer / Guitar: Durham Fenwick / Bass: Dave Weir / Guitar/Vox: Oscar Dowling. https://newgumsarn.bandcamp.com/music

The Auckland four-piece “New Gum Sarn” were really, really good. The release of their debut albumNew Gold Mountain’ will be released sometime later this year (TBC). I liked them. When they finished I headed for the exit. Catching my attention however, were two interesting tables I missed on the way in, tucked away in their own corner. The mess on top was colourful and the people sitting around them were contributing to it — they were making stickers. Of course, I joined in. I made three and gave two away. Cindy, the girl who I gave one away to, gave me one of her sticker eyes in return, and Chris, the other, happened to be part of the two-man crew who setup the free sticker making help-yourself-workshop, both of whom seemed way chillaxed — CHIPPY

Heading back to my car, I caught Cindy, sticker tagging one of her designs on the street, the creative rebel. …Come to think of it, actually, shit I think she stuck it to a tree XD We met further up the street, again, and, I like her. Not quite sure if her third sticker eye or the plastic bag sticking out of her right shoe had something to do with that, but yeah, a story for some other time perhaps. A good person. A good night overall really.

I like the idea of having plans, but I also seem to find myself very comfortable with impulsive decisions and going with the flow. I met some incredibly nice and cool people tonight, and that is one thing I never expected. Go with the flow, and it’s all a party.

Matthew Mcconaughey reacting to the STAR WARS teaser is the funniest “Force Awakens” thing I’ve seen since the memeing of the Sith army knife crossguard-saber:
