John Cena Prank Calls

•April 18, 2015 • Leave a Comment

A succession of wrestling related, unwanted phone calls from husband to wife:

SUUUPPPEEERRR SLAAAMMM!” Prank calls are rather immature and border on harassment. I laughed at this one though, maybe because it is genuinely hilarious, or because I had a friend back in high-school who used to do this to other kids we knew, usually around dinner time. Crack up memories. He was an oddball, and a good friend.

The Incredible Hulk Furious 7 Nod [cameos & easter eggs]

Lou Ferrigno & Vin Diesel, voice actors for two of the bulkiest onscreen superheroes, meet onscreen for the first time, but certainly not the last:

hulk vs groot

DOMINIC TORETTO: “You risk life and limb to save the free world and what do they give you?
Jell-O and a ‘bad’ seventies TV show.” HULK: “RAWRRR!”

A bit of fourth-walling, meta information being communicated here, no? Nothing featured is an accident when it comes to planning big budget motion pictures. This moment works on two levels, as it’s also a call back to Fast and Furious 6 when Tej (Ludacris) refers to Hobbs as The Hulk, saying, “Now we work for the Hulk?” So perhaps what I’m about to suggest is coincidental and ‘confirmation bias’ all in my head, or perhaps this is a little precursor to Hulk and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) from “Guardians of the Galaxy”, one day duking it out in an upcoming Marvel installment featuring Thanos and the infinity gauntlet. Side-note: Bruce Banner in “The Avengers” is played by Mark Ruffalo, and although CG Hulk is modeled after Ruffalo, he is actually voiced by TV’s original Incredible Hulk, Lou Ferrigno (uncredited). Here are some pics to think upon:

I dunno. Maybe I’m just batshit crazy. Not a spoiler, just mentioning another easily missed easter-egg here; later on in the same movie, while Hobbs (The Rock) is in the hospital, he watches a football game play on that same TV:

Hobbs

It so happens that’s from the November 16, 1991 game between the Miami Hurricanes and the Florida State Seminoles. That defensive tackle — #94 — you see sacking the quarterback is none other than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. So, The Rock, as Hobbs, is sitting in a hospital bed watching a football game where The Rock, as Dwayne Johnson, is making a big play. Worlds are colliding! Side-note: Johnson was injured during that season which derailed his NFL career, leading him to become “The Rock”, and eventually an actor…watching himself for real from within a fictional world. Some Southland Tales shit right there.

I enjoy paying attention to background details, just as much as I’m sure there are people who enjoy putting it there.

To end, here is one more geeky reference of an easter-egg courtesy of the Fast & Furious franchise (Fast Five/Fast & Furious 5: Rio Heist) — Han’s last name is Seoul-Oh. As in, his full name is Han Seoul-Oh! It’s a “Star Wars” reference, people.

Leonard in Slow Motion [short film]

•April 17, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Leonard (played by Martin Starr of “Freaks and Geeks” & “Silicon Valley” fame) exists in an eternal state of slow motion but lives in a regular speed world. Anything he touches is also affected, and he is tired of missing out on being normal. When he discovers his office crush is transferring to Florida, Leonard must somehow become regular speed to win her heart before she leaves town for good. Great casting. Well made short. (9 min)

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON — APRIL 22nd!!!

avengers-ultron

One week left to go! The movie is officially set for release May 1st, but my brother being into tales of superheroes at the age he is, prompted me to seek out seats to the AVENGERS theatrical release premiere, which fortunately is being hosted by my local comic shop, Heroes For Sale, in April. Yes, the premiere tickets double as fridge magnets:

avengers-ultron-premiere

AGE OF ULTRON has been marketed as the biggest action-packed superhero movie to grace the big screen since the beginning of the Marvel cinematic universe cannon. The Avengers’ (2012) opening weekend box office (ticket sales) gross is the highest on record in Hollywood history, so it will be interesting to see how the sequel fairs by comparison:

Studio Opening* % of Total Theaters Avg. Total Gross^
Marvel’s The Avengers Buena Vista $207,438,708 33.3% 4,349 $47,698 $623,357,910

Personally, I can’t imagine mentioning any spoilers that haven’t already been hinted at in the trailers, but If there are, I will TRY not to brag too much about them here. Only on Facebook. Reddit. 4Chan. There, I may drop some mad troll material for the all too eager.

I did try looking for my Ultron comics earlier, but I just wore myself out sorting through the pages and pages of pages…

GAME OF THRONES: Season 5 is Looking Exceptional

•April 14, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Pivotal characters dying is part of what makes this series narratively progressive and very entertaining. The writers know what they are doing, and I am so grateful to their craft of keeping the characters that do live on, consistent to their nature. One character in particular that I’ve liked since 2011 is Jon Snow. No spoilers here (even though I could be very sneaky if I wanted to). Every decision he has made is one I end up rooting the most for. Yes, dragons, angry mobs and vindictive rulers present their own harsh circumstances to bare witness to, but Jon Snow; the man knows nothing, and yet, SO MUCH WIN! Watch the first (#41) episode (The Wars to Come) and you will get it.

Game-of-Thrones-Season-5

I could go on about other characters, but, meh. Episodes are coming. Actually, the first four are already in circulation over the interwebs, through probably illegal channels keep in mind. I don’t get pleasure from trolling or blatantly dropping spoilers, so consider this a solid — your patients will be rewarded. Episodes are coming.

1 Guy 4 Cups — Plastic Cups Mix-&-Match Dressup

•April 13, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Simply draw your character and dress options on some clear cups and have a blast! Next time you have some clear plastic cups and a Sharpie lying around, try this clever idea from Redditor toper-centage — a mix-and-match game that lets you make a variety of goofy characters. More cups = more options:

Hmm, should I be concerned that cup man has more clothing options than I do?

The Likeness of Woman

drawingclub 2015-04-07 18.56.06Since the daylight hours are shortening, one of the outdoor life drawing sessions I enjoy attending had its final get-together on Tuesday. I normally leave during the final pose, I guess to avoid meeting people, but this time I stuck around to applaud the dancer come life model, the DJ, and Cleo Barnett the organiser, for hosting this neat event. I had a word with her afterwards and she gave me her details should anything similar take place throughout the year. Cleo is quite well known among creative circles apparently.

Drawing Club - 2

I’d like to think that I have a distinctive style. Not sure. I have always started from a person’s eyes, but I want to change that and learn how to begin from a basic line structure, while also getting better at drawing hands:

Drawing Club - 1

Afterwards, while unwinding my earphones at the lights, readying myself for the uphill walk to another drawing session in town, I ended up doing the very thing I most avoid and met someone new, a fellow artist named Janette, who I figured was pretty skilled simply by the look of her, not to mention simply pretty, and taking a note from Cleo’s previous act, I too shared my details. Although I’m not holding my breath over Janette hitting me up, I hope she looks into the sketch session I mentioned — speaking of:

Maree - Dr. Sketchy

It was a good night. Wondering to myself, if I don’t drive into the city next time and partake in the consumption of an alcoholic beverage of some sort, would that equal a fantastic night?! …Or, just, really shitty art-not-works?

I felt obliged to put an extra effort into my sketches that evening, primarily because I’m quite certain I was sitting next to Maree’s (life model) husband. I know right. Mind you, he was drawing too. So no dick pics or Roman orgy scenes graced the pages of my book.

Calcio Fiorentino — Italian Gladiator Football

calcio fiorentino

Whoa, and I thought Chessboxing was intense, this game is straight batshit. The city of Florence, still plays an early form of soccer called Calcio Fiorentino, that originated in 16th century Italy. In it, players are allowed to hit each other, but no kicks to the head, surprise attacks or ganging up. Think of it as a modern-day gladiatorial game, only, more threatening to the players’ braincells than the game is to their lives. Also you have to wear silly shorts:

Who said that men were terrible multitaskers. To be honest, I didn’t see much in the way of game dynamics happening there. Mostly men beating the shit out of each other. There is also a female team, less physical brutality, but still. Isn’t equality grand.
