New Zealander Buys MP3 Player, Finds Classified US Army Files

•February 12, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Chris OgleWhile used and refurb’d electronics have a long history of delivering more than the purchaser bargained for, New Zealand man Chris Ogle’s surprise find is a little more troubling. He picked up the above unidentified MP3 player at a thrift shop in Oklahoma for $18 used. On it were 60 files, many of which appear to be US Army property of a confidential nature, including lists of soldier names, SSNs, phone numbers, and a mission plan.

“One of the first rules of military endeavour is not to give the opposition anything whatsoever that they could use to compromise your position, in any way at all,” says Peter Cozens of Strategic Studies at Victoria University.

Sadly, the Government is choosing to ignore this little security breach, but we think it should step up and make Mr. Ogle an offer. He’s likely to let the thing go cheap thanks to a second unfortunate discovery: it doesn’t even play music any more.

Screw Valentine, Where’s My Cell Phone?!

•February 10, 2009 • Leave a Comment

A survey of Canadian cell phone users found 56 percent of them would rather hold their cell phone than a special person on Valentine’s Day [Feb 14]

The survey found 52 percent saying their phone is with them all day, every day, and if push came to shove, almost 40 percent would rather spend a week without their special partner than be without the phone for a week.

Humans can be so strange sometimes. Or maybe it’s just Canadians eh?

Exactitude: the quality or state of being exact, precise, or accurate

The focal point of this project. Exactitudes is an ongoing series of photos that shows the more we try to look unique, the more we conform to certain dress codes:

Rotterdam-based photographer Ari Versluis and profiler Ellie Uyttenbroek have worked together since October 1994. Inspired by a shared interest in the striking dress codes of various social groups, they have systematically documented numerous identities over the last 14 years.

The names for the style of dress code are cool as well. I guess this project just goes to prove how similar personality-traits people can have with others and our subconscious longing for belongingness …deep

THIS FILM IS GONNA KICK

In 1582 Oda Nobunaga was on the verge of conquering all of Japan, but was forced to commit suicide at Honno-ji Temple by one of his generals, Akechi Mitsuhide. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Nobunaga’s top general, overthrew Akechi a few days later and completed Nobunaga’s dream of unifying Japan under one ruler.

The world was at peace for a time, but soon a ninja bandit named Ishikawa Goemon (Yosuke Eguchi) appeared, using his super-human abilities to steal from the rich and give to the poor—a habit which cemented his reputation as a hero to commoners everywhere.

One night while looting treasure from Nanban (Southern Barbarians), Goemon finds a mysterious box hidden inside a secret grave. A forgotten relic from the past containing untold powers, it isn’t long before Ishida Mitsunari, Kirigakure Saizo, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Hattori Hanzo are all in persuit of the box for their own purposes.

Metronomy – A Thing For Me [music video]

•February 3, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Since the runaway success of their recent album Nights Out, Metronomy are back with their next single, A Thing For Me. Underpinned by perfectly arranged guitar chords, drum machines and general electric trickery.

This is a cool group and I really like their sound [Electro-synth-pop] Very minimalistic and effective. Here is another one of their songs I like, “Heartbreaker” which I feel I can only describe as being kindhearted:

GI Joe STOP-MOTION remake of THE THING

This is ZOMBIE ZOMBIE’s first non-official video which is a homage to Director John Carpenter and his classic sci-fi/horror masterpiece, “THE THING

Awesome. Etienne Jaumet and Cosmic Neman make up ZOMBIE ZOMBIE, the experimental-electronica duo from France.

Directed by Simon Gesrel and Xavier Ehretsmann; this is a flawless attempt at stop-motion animation. G.I. JOES are cool, John Carpenter is a legend and “THE THING”  is a great film. If you haven’t seen the movie, firstly, you really should, and second, I’m sure you’ll find a reason to appreciate this great short even if you haven’t.

Water Fountain Rips Woman’s Vagina

Tianyi Sqaure Fountain

This is a story from August 2007 that I found while reading an unrelated article.

A sad story but a miracle nonetheless:

Yang -19YrsOld

Yang and her friends were playing in the water fountain area and enjoying the light burst of water that would spray them. All of a sudden, while Yang was struck by a powerful burst of water that threw her into the air.

After the fall, Yang experienced extreme stomach pains and was bleeding badly. She was immediately taken to the hospital to undergo medical care.

The doctor said that the fountains water pressure had torn her vagina and damaged her intestines.

Know That Movie?

actress Elizabeth Pena and actor Tim Robbins - his best leading role ever played

I don’t even want you to try and guess it or IMDB this movie, because I love this film in particular so much that I’ll tell you exactly what it is:

Jacob’s Ladder

Iconic

This is a very special movie and won’t be as easy to find like most. Definitely Underrated.

Jacob Singer is a traumatized Vietnam War veteran suffering distressful flashbacks and disturbed visions. There is tension between what he knows and what he interprets his life as being.

That may seem like a very cryptic description of what this film is about, but I can’t really begin to explain its spiritual/drug induced/mind altered/life and death scenario; but it is a very exceptional piece of storytelling. Tim Robbins at his best.

You will either understand Jacob’s inner turmoil, or you won’t. A great film either way.

Watch Jacobs Ladder and tell me your thoughts won’t you?
