Food Waste — Dumpster Diving in NYC with Jeff Seal

•March 31, 2016 • Leave a Comment

On to…it? Far-out we are a wasteful species. My biggest take from this is that the dude was not trolling and is legit. He understands the value of food, which makes me question what the intrinsic value of shame is — Let’s prepare ourselves for the class war I guess?

(PG-13: Language) “That’s when you know you’re swimming in abundance, when you’re throwing away the food that someone else threw away.” Comedian Jeff Seal stocks up on packaged food thrown away by food establishments in NYC:

Directed and edited by Jeff Seal / Shot by Owen Cook, Iain Marcks, Karim Tabbaa / Garbage Consultant: Tanya Solomon / http://gothamist.com.

For many, the term “dumpster diving” evokes stomach-turning images of half-moldy rolls and recently-expired tuna salad snatched from the mouths of gnawing rats. But as many sophisticated urban survivalists know, there is an extraordinary amount of perfectly good, even gourmet, food set out every night in sanitary bags outside city delis, bakeries, restaurants, and supermarkets. The video above shows just how easy and clean the process of scoring great free food can be.

Comedian and filmmaker Jeff Seal spent four nights digging through trash bags outside NYC establishments and documented the process for this video. He says, “I actually got a ton more food than what is in the final video—I had to cut out a lot because it was getting boring and repetitive watching me endlessly pull different types of perfectly good food out of the garbage.”

As Seal notes in the video, “You know you’re living in abundance when you can throw away food that someone else threw away.” Don’t call it “dumpster diving”; call it “Locally-Sourced Reclaimed Food Curation.”

During his research into the statistics of food waste in America, Seal says he discovered that “I am just one in a long line of other self-satisfied white guys who have made videos/articles/art projects etc. about dumpster diving for food. I was reminded of the phrase, ‘Only a rich man can afford to look poor.'”

Seal would also like to add, for the record, “I do buy Sabra hummus pretty regularly.”

From Waiheke to Westminster — Pacific Poet and Scholar Selina Tusitala Marsh Reads Poetry to Queen Elizabeth II

•March 17, 2016 • Leave a Comment

Auckland University Pacific poetry lecturer Dr Selina Tusitala Marsh was commissioned to write and perform a poem about unity at the Commonwealth Day service at London’s Westminster Abbey.

selina2selina

This was once my lecturer at the University of Auckland, and I am happy to go on record saying, Selina Tusitala Marsh was and still is awesome! She was the one who offered me a spot to perform at a Lounge#37 poetry reading alongside a privileged selection of poets, and in that same year she also asked me to be her research assistant for a temporary period, which was neat now that I think back on it. Kind of felt like a private investigator. One time I was asked to track down Mike Tyson which led me to several Las Vegas casting agents who were rather unmotivated to update their webpages. Each lead colder than the last. Tyson was in New York. I never asked why, but I suspected it had something to do with a book. Another time Selina needed access to a rare interview with a poet from Papua New Guinea, which I discovered could only be sourced through one location and private holder in the world in Australia. After a lot of back-and-forth emails, I managed to obtain a digital audio file and transcript of the full interview, at which point I felt incredibly reliable. Although that job cost money, Selina reimbursed me so it was all good; felt legit.

All the students who I became friends with who were also taught by Selina agree, there isn’t a single class at the university like hers. Hands-down my favourite paper. I could not think of a better voice to represent Oceania and New Zealand, respectively.

Ms Marsh says she spoke with Queen Elizabeth II after the interfaith gathering, attended by the Duke of Edinburgh, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

“It’s one thing being on Waiheke island composing in your kitchen, it’s another thing to walk in and be standing in front of the tomb of Queen Elizabeth the first reciting your poem and that’s what I did, I spoke to her.” The event is the first of many events the Queen will attend during her 90th birthday celebrations.

LIVE on CNN: Someone at a Trump rally with a “Make Anime Great Again” sign…

America needs a return to good ol’ Japanimation, perhaps

But what about handwriting? Lol. Apparently the meme has been around for much of the election cycle but this is the most high-profile airing it’s gotten so far. And come to think of it, I do remember Donald Trump expressing his love for anime at a recent rally:

The title isn’t exactly fair, because to us, sure we think Giertz’s contraptions are lacking a certain opposite-of-shit quality, but to like-minded scientists, they are probably like; “we accept her, we accept her. One of us, one of us. Gooba-gobble, gooba-gobble.” 🙂

Massive Attack — “Voodoo In My Blood” feat. Young Fathers [music video] w/ Actress Rosamund Pike

A Floating Orb Menaces Rosamund Pike

Starring alone in Massive Attack’s latest music video of the single “Voodoo in My Blood” off their new Ritual Spirit EP (Massive Attack’s first new material since Heligoland in 2010), is actress Rosamund Pike, giving one intense and violent performance as she’s manipulated like a puppet by a mysterious floating metal sphere with sinister powers:

Sound Engineer: Aaron Reynolds / Director: Ringan Ledwidge / Production Company: Rattling Stick.

Considering the orb must’ve been CGI’d in later, Pike is literally reacting to nothing the entire time, making her performance all the more impressive. I love it. It reminds me of rhythmic gymnastics a little bit, only, the opposite with the roles of control reversed. I am reminded not in terms of force, obviously — that sphere was pissed about something — but in these athlete’s malleable contortions …plus shiny ball:

the apparatus is often caught blindly

Go, Son Yeon Jae! Yes, rhythmic gymnastics HAS taken over this post. It wasn’t intentional, but I did let it happen.

Back to Rosamund Pike; did you know she was a bond girl in “Die Another Day” (2002) alongside Pierce Brosnan?! The teaser for this movie looks insane!

That is how you do a trailer! Now, how about some action without any balls:

Polaroid Anomaly at the Cemetery [F]

•March 6, 2016 • Leave a Comment

Last weekend, Waikumete Cemetery held an open day that welcomed people to explore, learn, take part in cemetery related activities, and take guided tours of the 108 hectare property. I was there. With over 130 years of burials (70,000+) — a considerable cultural and heritage significance — a select few of the stories of buried men and women that were told, were eye-openingly interesting, although sometimes tragic and sometimes absurd, they were ultimately brought into Waikumete out of love. (Not 100% sure about the two murders buried upright with unmarked graves however).

That hill in the background is still part of the cemetery. The place is huge I tell you.

Truly a beautiful cemetery, with plenty of trees and distant horizons.

I took a photo using my Lomography Polaroid camera of a lovely gravestone that had been nudged by an overshadowing oak tree. It was overcast but light enough for me to think that the picture would come out fine, however, as you can see it is quite dark.

Supernatural photo

Something immediately struck as an irregularity as the Polaroid was developing in my fingertips, and that was the light rays protruding from the left hand side of the photo. I understand that if you deliberately mark the back of a Polaroid while it is developing you can create all sorts of strange and interesting patterns that the chemicals sealed in the Polaroid itself will react to and develop, but all I had done was gently hold and shake it. If my fingers had pressed in that spot, which is an amateurish move, the pressure would not have been strong enough to produce this let alone give it that symmetrical texture.

I searched the internet to learn if there was a light leak in my camera that needed fixing, or if someone could explain how this detail happened. The ONLY thing I have come across, so far, is this photo of a similar occurrence and curiosity:

Claw Hand of and from Brittney Richardson

Makes my eyes water: This picture of me as a baby was taken by my mom with a polaroid camera. (Which was then photographed from our family album) No one else was in the room except for my dad who is seen holding me. It was captured in our old house in AL. There is also a feather like thing in the top right hand corner, no idea what that was either.” ~ Brittney Richardson (Palm Springs, CA)

How interesting that photos taken years and countries apart should share identical variables. Peculiar. The majority of Polaroids I have taken that aren’t of close family members, are rubbish, but I consider this one special for sure.

Waikumete Cemetery is a fascinating place. That was an uncommon open day, but well called for, demystifying the morbidity of death and the operations of the cemetery for the public. Learning about the historical relevance of cemeteries and cultural differences in the treatment of lost loved ones makes me respect and love cemeteries that much more.

I plan to revisit the site later in the year to get a clearer picture of the oak and update this post. Until then, how do you feel about cemeteries, and what do you suppose the anomaly was?

Dr. Sketchy Auckland: Suicide Harley featuring Ellie May Marshall as Harley Quinn

•March 1, 2016 • Leave a Comment

Sparkled hotpants & dip-dyed hair, baseball bat & stiletto sneakers all up in your nerd-face like a first edition Batman comic. The model’s choose how they want to dress and my guess is that Ellie May is looking forward to the upcoming Suicide Squad movie, as she came fully embodied as the bubbly and psychotic character, Harley Quinn.

That evening I took a photo of one funny moment, as telling of the motion blur — spot prizes are usually awarded to artists whose drawings impress the model, but if the model can’t decide on one winner, the tie-breaker is a 30 second quick draw competition where each artist attempts to draw the other as fast as possible. When they are done, the room then decides who the winner is.

dr.skty hq 2016-02-02

In this case, the young woman on the right drew a hilarious impression of the girl on the left. It had more semblance to the puppet from those SAW movies, as the girl on the left quoted “I want to play a game”, but it was so funny, the girl who drew it unanimously won the prize.

I like the atmosphere at these things, but man I wish I was better at life-drawing, as opposed to manga-ing them up.

Afterwards I talked with a dude who had some mad skills with a mechanical pencil and I asked him if he could show me his technique for drawing hands. We sat outside a bar or sushi restaurant and drew for a bit longer. Turned out he was a graphic designer, so you bet I was paying attention.
