GAMER (2009) & UNREAL TOURNAMENT!!!

Gerard Butler stars as Kable and Logan Lerman stars as Simon in Lionsgate Films' Gamer (2009)

Following from the last post about Live-Action First Person Shooter Controlled By People On Chatroulette; there was a movie made in 2009 that took that very concept to the extreme — In the distant future when technology has been fully integrated into the human nervous-system, men and women on death-row become commodities to be controlled like pawns in a popular blood-sport. For competing, the inmates can hope to receive a reduced sentence, the major risk being, they’re in a literal high-stakes game of life or death, where the controlling gamers walk away without a scratch but the controlled players never get out alive:

I knew nothing about this movie when my aunt showed it to me, and I enjoyed it. Didn’t think much of Gerard Butler before watching it, and the only other film where I thought he was amazing in was CORIOLANUS (2011) directed by Ralph Fiennes, which is a modern-day retelling of Shakespeare’s 17th-century play of the same name. I really can’t see Butler as the romantic-comedy guy, at all.

Another reason I dug GAMER was because I was an UNREAL TOURNAMENT junkie, which in my opinion was and still is the epitome of all futuristic blood-sport games imaginable. Think THE RUNNING MAN with respawns and crazy weaponry, only there is nowhere to run but forward into battle:

I don’t think GAMER is original as it incorporates a lot of staple elements from video games and science-fiction troupes, but it does repackage those elements into a coherent narrative that is entertaining and not as preachy as one would expect from any movie dealing with themes to do with freedom and choice and the dangers of technology and those who control it. GAMER is one of those movies where watching it once is enough; it isn’t amazing, but it is OK. UT on the other hand, shieeet, it was so good that what was considered a dying franchise has been completely remade from the code up by devoted developers, Epic Games and the gaming community, featuring new content and returning classics, and was released to be played for free as a pre-alpha only recently; it looks so damn “WICKED SICK” — I’m so excited!!

Live-Action First Person Shooter Controlled By People On Chatroulette

•September 27, 2015 • Leave a Comment

YouTubers Realm Pictures created a semi-immersive chat-based game, which is like the 21st century equivalent of a text-based pick-a-path adventure. The studio set up a live action zombie roleplaying game around their office at a church location and then invited people on Chatroulette, Omegle and Skype to interact with them in real-time, taking control of the situation as if they were the central hero of a live-action video game:

There’s even a boss battle! From the protagonist’s comical fourth-wall commentary and his DOOM-style face icon, to how weapons and objects look and are interacted with; the makers really thought of everything. Watch the behind-the-scenes video for an insight into their creative process:

Floating Points — “Silhouettes” & Light Paintings

Taking into account that these light creations were produced by a custom-built 3 axis mechanical rig — losing that shaky element of the human touch — it is an impressive video none the less, featuring some otherworldly geometric creatures composed of all in-camera light effects, set to the appropriate fusion of electro-jazz funk:

Music by Sam Shepherd (aka Floating Points) from debut album, Elaenia / Video by Hamill Industries.

The music video is the experimental brainchild of a creative team of mix media artists and filmmakers Pablo Barquín, Junior Martínez, Nathan Grimes, and Anna Diaz Ortuño.

My Vague Intermittent Health Issues & Pain Relief Rant [F]

•September 26, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Hey, I’m baaack! Been feeling not so great as of late. In the last three weeks I have endured an infection, abdominal pains, and a high fever, twice. I don’t take acetaminophen or any anti-inflammatory drugs because A) I believe it is important I feel pain and don’t want to risk dulling any symptoms (not sure how that belief originated) and(/or) B) I am just too stubborn/hard/dumb to change. I didn’t attend uni for the last week and I didn’t tell my family the severity of my pain specifically because I don’t like causing my mother any worry. I didn’t consult a medical professional for antibiotics anytime during either, so I saved money in that respect too. I do feel dumb…but better.

I had a similar infection when I was a child, but I don’t think the two are related, and this time last year I discovered a swollen lump on the back of my head, and in the consultation with my GP, he told me it was a lymph node that was nothing to worry about, just my body taking care of itself naturally. That extremely brief, less than 10-minute appointment cost me $30, and I do worry because although the swelling disappeared within a day, there remains a firm bump in the spot where the swell occurred a year ago. So what am I really paying for when I am sick; relief for my body or my mind via a doctor’s assurance? Because I do believe my body is capable of healing itself given time (for some things), I guess I just want to be spared the bullshit and placebo effects especially if I am the one who has to ultimately pay for them. Pain serves an important function, does it not? If its cause cannot be eliminated outright, then why do people believe it is normal to ignore what their body is telling them by ingesting something that merely masks the symptom? I would like to ask, do you think it is OK to juggle between when and when not to see a doctor, or should one ALWAYS seek a doctor when pain strikes?

Damn my high tolerance, strong pain threshold and impeccable state of mind *cough cough*. Honestly though, sorry how this turned into a tmi rant about my personal health, I guess I just want you to know that there is an average person behind what you see written on this blog (be gone web developers and government spy agencies), who can and most probably will vacate whenever from time to time for whatever. And rest assured, I will always let you know if the reason for my hiatus is due to my own stupidity XD Yeah, my rant game is still strong. I have also discovered that as much as I hate getting sick, I hate catching up on academic readings and writing essays more. So much precious time wasted. Sheesh, I’ve got to kick into high gear if I want to win @life.

Peace!

Welcome back
Your dreams were your ticket out
Welcome back
To that same old place that you laughed about
Well the names have all changed since you hung around
But those dreams have remained and they’ve turned around

Who’d have thought they’d lead ya
(who’d have thought they’d lead ya)
Back here where we need ya
(back here where we need ya)
Yeah, we tease him a lot ’cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.

Welcome back
We always could spot a friend
Welcome back
And I smile when I think how you must have been
And I know what a scene you were learning in
Was there something that made you come back again

And what could ever lead ya
(what could ever lead ya)

Back here where we need ya
(back here where we need ya)
Yeah, we tease him a lot cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back

And I know what a scene you were learning in
Was there something that made you come back again
And what could ever lead ya
(what could ever lead ya)
Back here where we need ya
(back here where we need ya)
Yeah, we tease him a lot cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back

Yeah, we tease him a lot
Welcome back, welcome back
‘Cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back, welcome back

Yeah, we tease him a lot cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.

A daylight fireball from space, believed to be a meteorite, captured on Porjai Jaturongkhakun’s dashcam during his commute to work in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok:

“กำลังขับรถไปทำงาน เจอดาวตกตอน 08:41 กำลังมุ่งหน้าจากแยกพงษ์เพชรไปแยกแคราย (ขาออก) กล้องหน้ารถอัดภาพได้พอดีเลย (แชร์ได้ รบกวนให้เครดิตด้วยครับ)” [“I was heading to the West to go to work. At around 08:41am, in Ngamwongwas road, Nonthaburi, Thailand, the fireball showed up.”]

Donald Trump Says “China” …a Lot

•August 31, 2015 • 2 Comments

And saying “a lot” is an understatement — this man so obviously has China on the brain:

It doesn’t matter if you love him or hate him, everyone can agree that Donald Trump is one of the most talked about politicians of this election cycle. The news can’t help but shine a light on him. Besides illiegal immigration, the second most popular topic The Donald likes to discuss is China. “China, China, China.”
