I ♥ WAYWARD (Image) [comics]

WAYWARD by writer Jim Zubkavich, artist Steven Cummings and colorist Tamra Bonvillain is hands-down my favourite ongoing comic right now. I love it. The second arc will wrap up in issue #10 next month, which sadly means pangs of longing until I get to see the third arc, but it also means my WAYWARD five-part cover panorama will be complete, which I find is a very cool concept:

WaywardCover06_10-writer Jim Zub, artist Steve Cummings, and colorist Tamra Bonvillain The ‘Wayward’ Creative Team Take Us Behind the Scenes of their Ambitious Five Issue Panoramic Cover

This isn’t the first time the creators have played around with the cover art either:

“My Neighbor Totoro” (となりのトトロ) 1988 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

There are so many stories out there, so good artwork has become my deciding factor of whether I commit to subscribing to a comic or not. WAYWARD sold me in issue one; described as the camaraderie of Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Japanese mythology, which is a good selling line, but to me it is much more than that. The colouring, textures, detailed background work, youthful characters and their adversaries all make for a progressive narrative experience in each issue.

WAYWARD is a well-researched tapestry of monsters, magic, and myths. Mystical powers and genuine historical Japanese folklore collide in this underrated piece, I would definitely recommend to friends interested in getting into comics — it is a genuine comic experience executed to the best of each craftsman’s abilities, and again, I love it. Plus, you know, kids fighting a subculture of evil creatures in Japan; why not!?

Team Sleep — “Blvd. Nights” [♬]

I love Deftones and every project lead vocalist Chino Moreno is apart of. Team Sleep released their first studio album way back in 2005 to mostly positive reviews, and I just got word of their announcement to release their follow-up album, ‘Woodstock Sessions Vol. 4,’ this coming July 10th; that’s a 10 year hiatus! Not sure if I’m breaking any copyright laws here, but I found this live recording of my favourite Team Sleep track “Blvd. Nights” through another page’s encrypted sourcecode. Not sure why they would want to keep it exclusive, so here it is (still protected) — this track is fucking incredible!

8-Bit Cinema: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

The poignant sci-fi dramedy from Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman, takes the form of an old school video game. Watch the melancholy couple (Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet) as they traverse different stages of Joel’s memory like levels in a Super Mario game:

8-bit Cinema “gamifies” your favorite Hollywood Blockbusters and offbeat dramadies into 80’s arcade and NES inspired action.

Incoming Next-Gen Video Games: 2015

•June 22, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Here are some pictures and videos and maybe a brief description if you’re lucky, of some cool looking video games, recently announced at the E3 Expo:

doom

This game looks insane and I do feel an insatiable need to waste hordes of demons.

Mass Effect Andromeda

A new adventure awaits in the Mass Effect universe. With stunning visuals and a new galaxy to discover, BioWare delivers the next generation of space exploration. Mass Effect: Andromeda — Coming Holiday 2016 to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. …FPS?

FFVII Remake, because fans demanded it or something (I personally think FFVIII is better).

starwarsbattlefront

In Star Wars™ Battlefront™ you can battle in epic 40 multiplayer battles reminiscent of The Battle of Hoth. As the Empire, you must accompany AT-AT walkers as they march towards the Rebel base to destroy it. And as a Rebel, you must do everything you can to stop them. Star Wars Battlefront will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

And how about some freaking robot dinosaurs! Not much else in known about this interesting single-player title, other than it looks ridiculous.

Of course Fallout 4 needs a mention; this game is going to rock and probably make me forget the time on a regular basis.

NO-MANS-SKY-51

No Man’s Sky is a science-fiction game about exploration and survival set in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy. Think, open world galaxy universe!

And last but not least; Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. I hadn’t paid much mind to this, until I watched some extended gameplay footage and now I really, really want to experience this achievement in gaming. And I’m pretty sure that Eli kid is Liquid Snake.

“MISS TODD” [musical stop-motion animation]

•June 21, 2015 • Leave a Comment

It’s 1909, and the whole world is waking to the possibilities of flight. Miss Todd dreams of flying, but she’s got more than gravity holding her down. This is the story of her determination, her perseverance, and her passion — inspired by Emma Lilian Todd, the first woman in the world to build and design an airplane. This is a terrific tale and a lovely celebration of one of aviation’s pioneering women:

Lucie Jones as Miss Todd, Tristan Chenais as Didier Masson, Joy McBrinn as Mrs. Sage, Peter Marinker as Grandpa Joe. Director/Co-writer Kristina Yee / Writer Frances Poletti / Producer Suzanne Mayger / Cinematographer Nick Cooke / Production Designer Isona Rigan / Editor Michele Chiappa / Composer Matt Kelly / Sound Designer Tom Lock Griffiths / VFX Supervisor/Colourist Kamaljit Bains / SFX Supervisor Phil Chapman / Production Manganger Greorgia Orwell / Artistic Coordinator Pallavi Davé. <<full-credits.html>>

To validate that this tale truly was inspired by a real person in history; voilà:

E. Lilian Todd (1906)

Emma Lilian Todd (1865–1937), was a self-taught inventor who grew up with a love for mechanical devices and was the first woman in the world to design airplanes. She also invented and patented “a cabinet with a folding table, a cannon to be fired at noon by sun power, a unique sundial, and an aeolian harp device to be fastened in a tree where it would be played by the wind.” …I have trouble working a can-opener 60% of the time.

'Miss Todd' has been adapted into a children's picture book‘Miss Todd’ has been adapted into a children’s picture book, entitled ‘Miss Todd and Her Wonderful Flying Machine!’

Using stills from the short film, the story of Miss Todd comes to life in a whole new medium, thanks to publishers Compendium, Inc.  We hope that Miss Todd will go on and inspire the next generation to follow their dreams, and know that nothing can hold them down — not even gravity!

Björk “Stonemilker” [360° interactive music video]

•June 20, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Icelandic vocalist Björk, never-ceasing to amaze and inspire, released her music video for ‘Stonemilker’ and it is interactive, allowing you to control the direction of the camera in a panoramic 360° tilt and panning motion, as if Björk were serenading you, in real-time.

Shot on location in Iceland by award-winning director Andrew Thomas Huang, Björk’s ‘Stonemilker’ is a 360 degree virtual reality experience, taken from the album, Vulnicura.

One of the most forward-thinking musicians in the game, Björk is no stranger to futuristic experimentation and expression, with many groundbreaking music videos throughout her extensive career. I will surely feature more of her work in later posts.

Speaking of “posts”, ahem; Björk’s second solo album, Post, debuted 20 years ago (13 June 1995). Back in 1995, some people didn’t get Björk. 20 years later some people still don’t get Björk. Play those folks Post nice and loud, and watch as they recognize how modern music is slowly catching up with one of its bravest innovators. As an additional peice of info; Björk’s ‘real’ first album ‘self-titled’ Björk, was released when the artist was just 12 years old! She was unhappy with the project, saying; “I was a kid. My name was on the album, but those were not my songs.” Talk about creative genius huh.

Laser Plasma Technology — The Future of 3D Display Technology

•June 20, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Burton Inc. is located in Japan, and are the first to succeed in developing True 3D Display using Laser plasma technology — Their device can create 3D images in mid-air.

Aerial Burton 3D

The current available 3D holographic displays are based on having a “screen”, surface or substance (such as dust or water vapor) to intersect and interfere with the laser beam. The limitation of the visual field, and the physiological displeasure due to the misidentification of virtual images, being the most obvious drawbacks of the tech. Until now:

“Our display device uses the plasma emission phenomenon near the focal point of focused laser light. By controlling the position of the focal point in the x, y, and z axes, it displays real 3D images constructed by dot arrays in the air.” ~ http://burton-jp.com

According to Aerial Burton, this display can be used to help people in emergency situations, for example, power outage, earthquake or flood. People will be able to find evacuation routes and emergency supplies with the signalisation projected by this device. However, the 3D image’s resolution is not yet impressive, but for basic guidance display, it is excellent. But it is only a matter of time, right.
