Fascinating Portrait of Kite Fighting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

•June 29, 2015 • Leave a Comment

When I was little, me and my neighborhood friends used to throw half-bird-eaten plums at each other across my back lawn between the garage roof and the plum tree, yeah, but this right here is some next level play — in the crowded favelas of Rio de Janeiro, flying kites is more than a leisurely escape; it’s also a playful form of battle:

After futebol, soltar pipas, is Brasil’s most popular sport. In the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, pipa (kite) designs and airborne “cutting” strategies have been passed through generations, from rooftop to rooftop. Filmmakers Guilherme Tensol and Leandro HBL spent time in Rocinha, Rio’s largest favela, among its young pipa warriors and elder statesmen, absorbing their secrets and documenting their stories.

Watched that with a smile on my face. I love these mini-documentaries that show a different perspective of life, but facing reality of these kiters’ methods, this should be viewed as an activity filled with ignorance and I can only hope people are being responsible with their materials and that these young minds are being educated on the dangers of cerol or manja (manjha) — the name given to the mixture of industrial adhesive with ground powdered glass which is applied to the kite lines, making them abrasive and also deadly to the touch — because many innocent people have been hurt.

This blog avoids featuring human atrocities or graphic imagery, but sometimes to understand what is good, it helps to also understand what is bad — WARNING — the following pictures are of some bloody accidents of people coming into contact with neglected, modified, cerol/manja/glass-coated kite lines:

Man Parks in Handicap Spot in Brazil, Gets His Car Turned Into a Blue PiñAta and Is Publicly Shamed

park prank

Dammmnnnn. Epic public shaming of a non-handicapped driver who should have known better than to park in a disabled parking spot. If this video is any indication, the people of Brazil take illegal handicap parking very seriously. With the help of the jeering crowd and this now re-playable visual scar, here’s hoping the message sinks in.

People who abuse disabled parking zones are the WORST. They think they’re entitled to park where ever they want, completely disregarding the inconvenience they are causing to someone that actually needs to park in the disabled parking zone. Often, these people go without punishment, but after this man decided to carelessly park in a disabled parking spot, he was taught a lesson he wont soon forget. Hopefully next time he’ll think twice before parking in the disabled zone. Things could have gone down differently for sure, so just don’t do it!

I ♥ WAYWARD (Image) [comics]

WAYWARD by writer Jim Zubkavich, artist Steven Cummings and colorist Tamra Bonvillain is hands-down my favourite ongoing comic right now. I love it. The second arc will wrap up in issue #10 next month, which sadly means pangs of longing until I get to see the third arc, but it also means my WAYWARD five-part cover panorama will be complete, which I find is a very cool concept:

WaywardCover06_10-writer Jim Zub, artist Steve Cummings, and colorist Tamra Bonvillain The ‘Wayward’ Creative Team Take Us Behind the Scenes of their Ambitious Five Issue Panoramic Cover

This isn’t the first time the creators have played around with the cover art either:

“My Neighbor Totoro” (となりのトトロ) 1988 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

There are so many stories out there, so good artwork has become my deciding factor of whether I commit to subscribing to a comic or not. WAYWARD sold me in issue one; described as the camaraderie of Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Japanese mythology, which is a good selling line, but to me it is much more than that. The colouring, textures, detailed background work, youthful characters and their adversaries all make for a progressive narrative experience in each issue.

WAYWARD is a well-researched tapestry of monsters, magic, and myths. Mystical powers and genuine historical Japanese folklore collide in this underrated piece, I would definitely recommend to friends interested in getting into comics — it is a genuine comic experience executed to the best of each craftsman’s abilities, and again, I love it. Plus, you know, kids fighting a subculture of evil creatures in Japan; why not!?

Team Sleep — “Blvd. Nights” [♬]

I love Deftones and every project lead vocalist Chino Moreno is apart of. Team Sleep released their first studio album way back in 2005 to mostly positive reviews, and I just got word of their announcement to release their follow-up album, ‘Woodstock Sessions Vol. 4,’ this coming July 10th; that’s a 10 year hiatus! Not sure if I’m breaking any copyright laws here, but I found this live recording of my favourite Team Sleep track “Blvd. Nights” through another page’s encrypted sourcecode. Not sure why they would want to keep it exclusive, so here it is (still protected) — this track is fucking incredible!

The poignant sci-fi dramedy from Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman, takes the form of an old school video game. Watch the melancholy couple (Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet) as they traverse different stages of Joel’s memory like levels in a Super Mario game:

8-bit Cinema “gamifies” your favorite Hollywood Blockbusters and offbeat dramadies into 80’s arcade and NES inspired action.

Incoming Next-Gen Video Games: 2015

•June 22, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Here are some pictures and videos and maybe a brief description if you’re lucky, of some cool looking video games, recently announced at the E3 Expo:

doom

This game looks insane and I do feel an insatiable need to waste hordes of demons.

Mass Effect Andromeda

A new adventure awaits in the Mass Effect universe. With stunning visuals and a new galaxy to discover, BioWare delivers the next generation of space exploration. Mass Effect: Andromeda — Coming Holiday 2016 to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. …FPS?

FFVII Remake, because fans demanded it or something (I personally think FFVIII is better).

starwarsbattlefront

In Star Wars™ Battlefront™ you can battle in epic 40 multiplayer battles reminiscent of The Battle of Hoth. As the Empire, you must accompany AT-AT walkers as they march towards the Rebel base to destroy it. And as a Rebel, you must do everything you can to stop them. Star Wars Battlefront will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

And how about some freaking robot dinosaurs! Not much else in known about this interesting single-player title, other than it looks ridiculous.

Of course Fallout 4 needs a mention; this game is going to rock and probably make me forget the time on a regular basis.

NO-MANS-SKY-51

No Man’s Sky is a science-fiction game about exploration and survival set in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy. Think, open world galaxy universe!

And last but not least; Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. I hadn’t paid much mind to this, until I watched some extended gameplay footage and now I really, really want to experience this achievement in gaming. And I’m pretty sure that Eli kid is Liquid Snake.

“MISS TODD” [musical stop-motion animation]

•June 21, 2015 • Leave a Comment

It’s 1909, and the whole world is waking to the possibilities of flight. Miss Todd dreams of flying, but she’s got more than gravity holding her down. This is the story of her determination, her perseverance, and her passion — inspired by Emma Lilian Todd, the first woman in the world to build and design an airplane. This is a terrific tale and a lovely celebration of one of aviation’s pioneering women:

Lucie Jones as Miss Todd, Tristan Chenais as Didier Masson, Joy McBrinn as Mrs. Sage, Peter Marinker as Grandpa Joe. Director/Co-writer Kristina Yee / Writer Frances Poletti / Producer Suzanne Mayger / Cinematographer Nick Cooke / Production Designer Isona Rigan / Editor Michele Chiappa / Composer Matt Kelly / Sound Designer Tom Lock Griffiths / VFX Supervisor/Colourist Kamaljit Bains / SFX Supervisor Phil Chapman / Production Manganger Greorgia Orwell / Artistic Coordinator Pallavi Davé. <<full-credits.html>>

To validate that this tale truly was inspired by a real person in history; voilà:

E. Lilian Todd (1906)

Emma Lilian Todd (1865–1937), was a self-taught inventor who grew up with a love for mechanical devices and was the first woman in the world to design airplanes. She also invented and patented “a cabinet with a folding table, a cannon to be fired at noon by sun power, a unique sundial, and an aeolian harp device to be fastened in a tree where it would be played by the wind.” …I have trouble working a can-opener 60% of the time.

'Miss Todd' has been adapted into a children's picture book‘Miss Todd’ has been adapted into a children’s picture book, entitled ‘Miss Todd and Her Wonderful Flying Machine!’

Using stills from the short film, the story of Miss Todd comes to life in a whole new medium, thanks to publishers Compendium, Inc.  We hope that Miss Todd will go on and inspire the next generation to follow their dreams, and know that nothing can hold them down — not even gravity!
