Fake Sextortion Email Scam [F]

•June 15, 2019 • Leave a Comment

I was targeted! Recently received an email stating my computer had been compromised with a malware virus which downloaded my list of contacts and recorded me being sexual with myself. It went on to describe what would happen if I did not transfer bitcoin to the sum of USD $999 to this anonymous sender’s account:

What a joke.

None of it made any logical sense so I wasn’t scared in the least of being “exposed.” Ignoring it was the best course of action, but I also flicked a report to Netsafe NZ and they confirmed my better judgement. Here is what they had to say:

Netsafe has received numerous reports about the particular scam email you described in your report. From what we understand, the scammer does not have access to your computer equipment or your information. They’re attempting to scare you into making payment to them.

It appears to be a variation of an email scam we have seen in the past. You can find a Netsafe advisory about this scam email here

Netsafe will retain a record of the information you have shared with us. This will help us track who the scammers are targeting and how they operate.

Thank you again for your report. Reports like yours help us to identify emerging patterns, which we use to keep New Zealand internet users informed about scams and the ways they can protect themselves.

Netsafe directed me to a page that can reveal if email information has been stolen and from what website, which I think is cool and everyone should look into:

The website ‘Have I Been Pwned?’ contains details about a number of large data breaches. You can visit the site to check if your email address is listed as being affected by any of the breaches included on the site. If your email address is listed, make sure you update your password on any of the affected sites.

5 data breaches!! Although I haven’t used those sites in a long time (and never will again), that is most likely where my information (email & password) were taken from, in order to scare-convince me to cough up bitcoin for some anonymous moron/s.

The internet is a weird and wonderful place, but let’s be honest, not everyone in the world is weird and wonderful. Right Woody?

Uhh, where am I going with this? …Be wise and take care 😎

Office Chair Street Racing in Japan

•June 14, 2019 • Leave a Comment

Teams of three compete to complete the most laps of a 200-meter course during a two-hour span, at Nakamachi shopping district special course (Oshu, Iwate Esashi), with the winning team rewarded 90 kg of rice! (Iwate Esashimi Gold Rice to be exact. Runner-up gets 60 kg and 3rd place 30 kg)

The event, which started with a race in Kyoto in 2009, was the brainchild of Tsuyoshi Tahara, and will feature at 10 different grand prix events across Japan this year.

Tahara’s idea has proved surprisingly popular, with 55 teams entering the Hanyu Grand Prix alone and hailing from as far away as Wakayama Prefecture, 600 km (about 400 miles) to the southwest. Sunday’s winning team, Kitsugawa Unyu, came from Kyoto and had also traveled several hours with their chairs for the race.

FINAL FANTASY Music Now On Spotify [♬]

•June 8, 2019 • Leave a Comment

Streaming music service Spotify is generally hit-or-miss for video game soundtracks. That’s not so for Final Fantasy anymore, as official soundtracks for all the main games and many of its spin-offs are now available for your listening pleasure:

Noticed yesterday by Twitter user RickyWinsKO, the service’s FF catalogue is now quite extensive. Soundtracks from the NES original on up to Final Fantasy XV are available.

Multiple albums cover MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV and its expansions, including music from the original release, before it relaunched as A Realm Reborn. Record Keeper, Dissidia, Tactics—I am in soundtrack heaven. They’ve even got the soundtrack for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, a movie no one cares about.

To access the soundtracks, open up Spotify and do a search for “Final Fantasy Original Soundtrack” and click on Albums. It beats the hell out of listening to FF tunes via YouTube vids.

And this announcement just dropped:

Official Number of Kiwis Named After GAME OF THRONES Villain — 67

•May 24, 2019 • Leave a Comment

If you were upset with how Game of Thrones ended, spare a thought for the Kiwi kids who have been named after one of its most vicious mass murderers.

Since the show started in 2011, a total of 67 New Zealanders have been named either ‘Daenerys’ or ‘Khaleesi’.

To be clear, nobody in New Zealand has been given the character’s 33 word full title name, which is: Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons. Sooo…it could be worse.

The total of 67 children in New Zealand named after the character includes anyone with either ‘Daenerys’ or ‘Khaleesi’ as a first or middle name, but does not include any misspellings of those names — so the number could be even higher.

In the US, at least 3500 girls have been named after the mass murderer, according to the Washington Post, with ‘Khaleesi’ being the 549th most popular name for American girls born in 2018.

While the HBO series Game of Thrones has finished, the Song of Ice and Fire novel series it is based on still has two books to be released, which may include a somewhat different ending to the TV show.

Spoiler alert: Game of Thrones final season plot details follow.

Although she started out as a central character and quickly became a fan favourite, Daenerys Targaryen developed into a homicidal psychopath in the show’s final episodes.

Despite its military forces surrendering, she used her dragon to destroy the city of King’s Landing in season 8, massacring thousands of innocent men, women and children.

“Our queen’s nature is fire and blood,” says Tyrion Lannister in the final episode.

“My father [Tywin] was an evil man, my sister [Cersei] was an evil woman. Pile up all the bodies of all the people they ever killed, there still won’t be half as many as our beautiful queen slaughtered in a single day.”

Paths of Hate [animation]

Neat, frenetic short about two fighter pilots with nothing but contempt for the other:

Skydivers Land Safely After Mid-Flight Plane Crash!

•May 15, 2019 • Leave a Comment

Found the craziest go-pro footage ((replayed from 4 different angles)) I think I have ever seen!!

Two planes carrying a total of 9 skydivers collided mid air, 12,000 feet above Superior, Wisconsin. The wings disconnected from one of the planes causing a fiery explosion. All 9 skydiver landed safely, as well as the two pilots, one of which was taken to the hospital to treat minor cuts.

TCAS for Christmas then aye lads (Traffic Collision Avoidance System) 😅

Satoshi’s Treasure — Hunting in the Digital Age

•May 7, 2019 • Leave a Comment

The internet is a weird and wonderful place indeed. I stumbled upon this enigmatic webpage, calling for hunters to solve puzzles spanning the globe using cryptic clues.

And by stumbled upon, I was actually scouring radio station websites and links for cheap Fleetwood Mac tickets, when some shitty website and/or adware lead me here. I explored its simple source code and honestly, it seems legit — an unknown group has pooled together to create a treasure hunt:

It will require contestants to monitor “the output of the primitive orbitals known in your time (your time?) as GALAXY18, EUTELSAT 113, TELSTAR 11N, and TELSTAR18V,” satellites in other words, as well as be on the lookout for three random people they call “agents” to present them with items (such as Ornament of Abhidharma and William Gibson’s short story Burning Chrome) in exchange for a key. All of this effort for the winning prize of Bitcoin, equal to the sum of 1 million dollars USD.

One clue comes with a rather strange animated GIF:

The quest offers a promise of bitcoin, but calls for a level of mental prowess I very much doubt the average Joe looking for Fleetwood Mac tickets has the time and/or interest in pursuing. …And intellect. There’s something else here… This is about something else… I suspect the organizers get a lot more out of this then what is being let on however much fun. I’m talking counter-intelligence level sneakiness. Smart minds come and play, sure, but I would be suspect of scrutiny from the game-masters behind the veil. But I digress, have at it if y’all are game, and feel safe.

As for me, I’m tired (finished 12 hour shift 3 hours ago), and frustrated (tickets are selling upwards from $300!) and confused (have I been trolled by this silicon valley Satoshi shit!?) — Adieu!

Independence Day: A Star Wars Story [mashup]

•May 4, 2019 • Leave a Comment

Ever since Disney took over Star Wars, we’re getting at least a movie a year from the franchise. But one film that’s not currently slated is an unknown side story in which Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum must destroy the Death Star after it blew up the White House.

May the Fourth be with you!

Today was the first thick morning fog of the year and I happened to have a thick torch, so yeah, naturally I goofed off on the job, in honour of a classic, because I’m fun like that.

You seem all good, but no one else must know! Move along, move along.

This short animation is a love letter to the 1980’s:

The animator also made this short about a break-up between two people who might actually deserve each other:
