Final Exams Next Week and I Am Unprepared …I Think

•October 29, 2013 • Leave a Comment

I have two exams next week and two more the week after. I learnt stuff, for sure, but I’m not confident in my ability to concisely articulate my learning’s through freehand writing without the luxury of the revision process. I do not like examinations, period.

No, that can’t be the real reason why I’m hating this pre-exam vibe leading up to the exams. There were a few course readings, lectures and tutorials I just plain neglected. I feel like an idiot now, which I don’t like, only I’m thinking whether this is the point of this whole exam period, considering that being a dunce means having an incapacity to learn, and I am suffering from a mental deficiency of having no way of knowing what the exam questions are going to be, so maybe I shouldn’t worry about not knowing, you know, because it’s the knowledge of the exam that’s inducing this state of mind. Therefore, my actions could never have preempted me from feeling the way I do right now; this feeling was inevitable and serves a purpose. I suppose all I’m meant to gain during this period is a sense of encouragement to study. Hmm…Or would acknowledging that my idiocy is a repercussion of the institution and not my actions be counterproductive to my studying towards answering the intentionally undisclosed exam questions? Back to square one again, Fin. Seriously, who the heck likes exams? DAMN YOU EXAMS!!! You’re going to make a fool out of me! By making me, knowledgeable… 😕 Well at least I’m smart enough to recognize my own dumbness. Do they give marks for that?

The Hill Valley Project – Someone Reenacting Back To The Future On Twitter

•October 28, 2013 • Leave a Comment

Happening right now is a real-time twitter reading of BACK TO THE FUTURE. Considering someone had to create over 50 separate twitter accounts to make this work is quite impressive, obsessive, but impressive:

Hmm, not sure if this calls for popcorn or not?

Known for creating images using numerous objects (and playing with her food), Red‘s work is extremely simple yet effective. In her new series, Red has meticulously plucked the petals of pretty flowers to reform them in the image of exotic birds in all their colourful glory:

Hornbill made of chrysanthemums, germeras and purple shamrocks.

Behind the scenes – eagle piece.

Eagle made of white, maroon and yellow chrysanthemums.

Flamingos made from pink gerberas and twigs.

Rattle Ya Dags – BE YOURSELF!!!

•October 24, 2013 • Leave a Comment

RattleyaDags has an awesome assortment of interesting and inspirational tidbits from some of New Zealand’s most positive role models. I came across this YouTube page totally by chance, and I’m a little angry about that. Was this even promoted anywhere, but more importantly, why did it stop?! I think it’s so cool and a great medium for connecting the Kiwi youth with familiar and influential, positive kiwi thinkers:

Ladi6 (Karoline Tamati) is New Zealand’s premiere vocalist MC, renowned for her energetic live performances, sublime soulful vocals and conscious lyrics. Ladi6 started her musical career as part of New Zealand’s first all-girl hip-hop group Sheelahroc, who supported international acts including The Roots, De La Soul and 50 Cent.

P Digsss (Paora Apera) is the vocalist for drum and bass act Shapeshifter. Shapeshifter have been heralded as a musical phenomenon for their ground breaking live shows and unique blend of heavy soul/drum and bass. The popular act have recently released their fourth studio album, The System Is A Vampire, to critical and commercial success.

Nick Dwyer is a writer, broadcaster and TV presenter. He’s been on music TV presenting on Max TV, Juice TV, M2 and C4. A respected music journalist, Nick also wrote, presented and co-directed music travel series Making Tracks. He has been on the radio for 15 years and currently hosts the breakfast show on George FM.

Shavaughn has been a fixture on television screens, both here and overseas, since she was 18. After finding fame on kiwi kids institution What Now, Shavaughn moved to the UK where she was one of the hosts of Saturday morning TV show SMTV LIVE.

Both Clarke Gayford (MORE FM, The Edge, Channel Z, C4, George FM) and Matt Gibb (U live, STUDIO 2, Squirt) are youth personalities in their own right, who above all else both have positive attitudes and helpful advice.

Danielle Cormack hit our screens on television soaps Gloss and Shortland Street, and has gone on to star in dozens of films, TV dramas and stage productions making her one of New Zealand’s most respected and well-known actors. She recently appeared in the Australian television drama Wentworth.

Jeremy Elwood is an award-winning stand up comedian who has garnered critical and popular acclaim for his no-holds-barred style, and intelligent, relevant material. He can be seen regularly at The Classic comedy club, writes the popular Political Animal blog for 3news.co.nz and appears on comedy series 7Days.

Bring this back! These are awesome and if I had a monogamous attention span I suppose I could post one of these videos everyday. I’m not going to do that.

STOP Lucky Charms in China / Live Animals Being Sold as Keychains

•October 22, 2013 • Leave a Comment

I didn’t even know this was a thing before a friend PM’d me the petition page:

STOP Lucky Charms in China - Live Animals Being Sold ss Keychains

Animals living under plastic containing a liquid nutrient and oxygen that allows them to live up to 2 months is a new fashion jewelry craze in China. Pretty morbid, right? Monetising death. Come on China, there are some things that you do that bring a laugh, this isn’t one of them. How we treat the natural world is important and says a lot about our humanity. This is sick and cruel, not cute. Sign the petition please, it is as easy as typing, literally.

Acknowledge it or not, you surfer, are a part of an international community that can help appeal to UN and the Chinese government to condemn this ridiculous nonsense. I don’t want to see this catching on if you know what I mean:

Yes, there’s a Simpsons pic for everything.

Dark In The Boy’s Anniversary!

•October 19, 2013 • 2 Comments

Yay, happy blog-birthday to me! This is quite a milestone:

Happy Anniversary DITB!

Congratulations for being a loyal user of WordPress services for five years. Pretty cool, I guess. If cool means being a perpetual loner who finds happiness on the internet then yeah, I’m the funking bomb diggity fives years running son! Thanks WordPress, but really I’d appreciate it more if you’d get back to me on that Ads-Manager deal-e-o. You know.

Never thought I’d commit so much time to this blog. I didn’t even know what the heck blogging meant when I started, hence the randomness and why my first posts were poems and a Queens of the Stone Age YouTube vid.

Thanks for visiting me 🙂 My hope is that every now-and-then one of you surfers will read or see something on here that will make you smile or think. That is enough for me and that’s all anyone can hope for really. This is the nature of the internet after all; to vicariously feel for things we cannot touch and experience moments of genuine surprise. Even though you and I don’t completely know each other; because of you, this medium, expressing my thoughts; I don’t feel so alone. I guess this is what blogging for me comes down to — attempting to connect a feeling of disconnect — unless someone out there has a behavioural profile to throw at me and debunk my introspection?

I may be a bit cynical about being congratulated and praised in general but only because, more often than not, it is I who should be grateful. Thanks WordPress, for reminding me that five years is an extremely long fucking time 😛

“MEDIEVAL LAND FUN-TIME WORLD” — A Bad Lip Reading of Game of Thrones

Sadly, I would pay money to see this. Theme park manager Eddie Stark has one week to whip his lackluster group of employees into shape before the park’s grand opening:

GAME: 8-bit Game of Thrones

•October 16, 2013 • Leave a Comment

This is pretty neat as a stand alone tribute to the show, but Abel Alves went that extra bit and created an entire game and is offering it as a free download, for free!

Game of Thrones gets turned into a side-scrolling retro platform by Abel Alves. But unlike many 8-bit tribute videos, you can actually play this version. PC users can grab the game here (Mac users will need an emulator, unfortunately)

Katherine Mansfield’s Legacy

•October 14, 2013 • Leave a Comment

New Zealand writer Katherine Mansfield Beauchamp Murry was born on this day in 1888. She was a prominent modernist writer of short fiction who was born and brought up in colonial New Zealand.

Google honoured her birthday while simultaneously reminding me about the BNZ Literary Awards and who the winner was for the prestigious Katherine Mansfield main prize:
